Default wheel/tyre size for tracked 964

hi guys,
just thinking about different options.

I have two sets of MM Cup1 replica wheels. That is the wheel, my car looks best with... That wheels have different tyres fitted. At the moment, i have a set of Michelin Cup2 tyres 225/255 R17 fitted...
Onother set of wheels is the five spoke 996 wheel in 18-inch in 8 & 10 inch width... that wheel (ET65 rear) is fitted with 23mm spaces and that works well at trackdays.

The 18-inch wheel was roughly two seconds faster at a track, where i did two trackdays this year yet:

18-inch:

17-inch:

i know i compare also two different tyres (cup2 vs. nankang AR1), but i guess, the 18-inch is the faster (perhaps not better) wheel for the 964 platform.

The 18-inch wheels in 8 and 10 inch width are not equal "packed" with the 225/40 and the 265/35 tyre. The rear tyre is so narrow, that i scratch the rim, when i put the wheel flat to the ground for storage. Front looks good, but could also handle perhaps one size more (235/40) tyre...

The feeling of my car (manual rack, monoball everywhere, 1992 cup dampers, euro-rs springs, 993 RS topmounts, 935 style spring-plate, euro RS-sways) tells me, i could need a little bit more grip at the front end... That is equal, even if 17 or 18-inch is fitted, but i am just interessted in improving the 18-inch wheelset.

What do you guys think about 245-40 and 285-30 as tyre combination? My car is a little bit streched at the rear, so i am sure, the car can handle the 285 rear.. 245 front should also possible

What do you think about 235-40 and 285-30?
What do you think about 235-40 and 265-35?
What do you think about 245-40 and 265-35?

Is there a huge improvement in all-over grip, when i use 285 rear and could improve the front-grip in the same way? Does this additional "patch" matter?

Or should i more focus to fine-tuning and going the 235/265 route?

thx for your opinion in advance...

best regards

thilo

e.g.: as i lapping more and more the ring and focusing a littel bit to this track, i have to say that the drivability is the most important thing. I do not need a snappy and tail-happy car there....

I'd go 245/35 front and 275/35 rear as seen on this very fast 964

Thilo, please check the options in order to not undermine the ABS control unit

I use these: Nitto NT01 235/40-18 / 275/35-18
My car has rolled fenders and aggressive wheel offsets to maximize rubber on the car. I'm not sure I could fit a 245 up in the front w/o a lot of rubbing... the 235 if really tight, the 275 rear is right at the edge of the wheel wells and inner clearance like the oil pipe. Of course, this is very setup, wheel, and tire dependent.

I find this balance fine and I don't feel like I need more front grip. Car has lots, and the balance F/R feels good. And ABS works fine.

275-35-18 is not a quite common tyre size in europe nor available for semi slick track day tyres at all here in germany...

the only tyre that is avail there is the toyo 888R, which is not my first choise...

Can you not get Bridgestone re71r tires? They have the 275’s.

Good to see this picture of the Old Dirty Bastard. The kid really drove the wheels off that thing. Hell of a car. Hell of a driver.
