Hey Doug,
I have not heard much buzz on this board about Pilots, or on the Tire Rack site. Have you tried those on your C2?

I have the regular Pilots and love them. I have S03s on the TT and would rather have the Pilots.

There was a test recently on the Tire Rack site of the Pilot 2s and they stomped everything in track times and etc. I belive the S03s were second in dry conditions with the F1s in third. They did not compare the regular Pilots in this test. I know Viken strongly recomends the Pilot ribs or the Pilot 2s. The GT3, according to another thread, uses the Pilot 2s from the factory.

The test graphs look like a pretty significant advantage for the Pilot 2s in the dry. This is what I am going to on my 04 996.

In the UK, I have been told that the Pilot 2's are not available in the correct sizes for people who use 17inch wheels.

Apparently the Pilot 2's are a whole kettle of fish compared to the Pilots in terms of performance.....

I am looking at SO3's or F1's next time I need 4 tyres. In the meantime I will stick with my porky 712's.

Thank you, Mary!

So comparing these to Joey's original chart, the tires are lighter than most but about 8-10 oz./tire heavier than the Toyos in each size.

I (personally) have no idea if such a weight difference, approx. 3 pounds total incl. all 4 wheels, is an issue even for driver who are far more advanced than I am! But I would be interested in knowing if anyone has compared them head:head for grip, etc.

Hope this helps. See next post. J

I know they are hardly Performance oriented, but Consumer Reports recently did a head:head comparison of a number of "ultra-high performance tires" including:

1. Eagle F1 GSD3
2. Toyo Proxes T1-S
3. Michelin Pilot Sport
4. Pirelli P-Zero Nero
5. Bridgestone S-03
6. Yoko AVS ES100
7. Kumho 712

as well as several others that we haven't mentioned. They tested 17-inch tires on an SVT Focus so YMMV! They tested for Braking, Handling (obstacle avoidance, cf: offset slalom), cornering (skid pad) in both wet and dry conditions. I'll post specific info if folks want it, or PM me, but it's in the November '03 CR.

The overall scoring places the tires in the order I listed them in above, with the Goodyear and Toyo listed as "Excellent" and all the others rated, to varying degrees, as "very good."

I wish they'd have done the S-02s! J

Yeah, but they use price heavily in their equiation and they also use long term use or wear issues. A better perfoming tire will wear quickly and score low with the Consuder Reprt studies.

Updated chart (thanks JoeW!)

I also added the Kumho MX's which, as previously mentioned, are middle of the pack along with the F1's. The MX's go for $500/set, so I'd say they take the prize for value choice.

As for the performance choice, IMHO, I don't think you can go wrong with either the Toyo's or F1's. I know jbotx saw a dramatic difference when going to the F1's but I would imagine that swapping out old tires for state of the art rubber will usually provide that impression (someone, tell me if I'm wrong).
Thanks for playing.

Yeah, Doug, I agree. In this case, perhaps that would explain some of the overall rating. In their "handling" and "cornering" tests, however, the Toyo and the F1 were both consistently higher in rank, in both dry and wet, than the others. This of course is without "value" factored in. J
