Driving 964s fast
Probably a waste of bandwidth, but I was stretching the old girl's legs a bit and ran her up pretty good on an isolated stretch of highway. I like the way the 964 handles and feels at speed. Mine is not stock, but I like the way it feels at speed maybe even better than the 996 TT. It feels very smooth, stable and well planted and is very easy to get up to speed. The brakes are a little twitchy feeling when braking at high speeds compared to my TT, but she cruises great for an older car.
My 3.2 Carrera was a handful at high speeds compared to my 964. Anyone else ever compared the handling characteristics of the 964 at speed to those of the newer Porsches. Is it just my Ruf suspension or do they all cruise ultra smooth at speed.

I would agree...as you pass about 90 mph and up, the car just smooths out and is almost eerily stable... And no, it's not just your Ruf suspension,mine is stock with new shocks and 225/245 tires and I love that feeling...

I don't if it makes a difference, but these tires are on 7/8 x 16 inch wheels. Other than that, I read up and the consensus was that they'd fit. And they do!... with no rubbing, even with hard driving! The grip vs 205/225 is significantly greater, however the 225's in front do follow lines on the road sometimes...

I have 225/40s and 265/35s. 245/40 will definitely rub int eh front as tire rack sent me wrong sizes and we found out the hard way.
Rolled fenders. They would definitely rub without my fenders being rolled with the Pilots Sports. The Pilots seem a little larger than the tires that were on the front when I bought it.

tire rubbing
My car is a 94 C4 wide body, stock US ride height. Looks a little SUVish compared to the lowered cars on the forum. I have owned the car for one year and want to do a few upgrades. My thought are to lower car to RS height and add bigger tires. Currently have 205 Front/ 225 in rear.

For bigger tires, I think would need to go with bigger rims. There is a thread about supension that may have prices and etc., but I am sure you could do the H&R coil over (I think this is what it is called) for about $ 2,500.00. That would lower about the same as mine.
There is a Porsche wheel site that sells all of the zporsche rims alot cheaper than dealer. Maybe just going larger rim would get it a more agressive stance and you would not have rubbing issues because it is not lowered. I am really not the most knowledgeable person on this subject. There are people on her that knwos these answers. Maybe start a thread on the subject.

RE: Following the lines in the road. Mide did this, until I got my Pilot Sports. Either I have gotten used to it and don't notice it anymore, or the tires made a bit of a difference.

My car used to be a litlle unstable above about 120mph on a smooth road, very unstable above 100 on a slightly bumpy one.
Lowering (H&R) made a big difference. Now, it just becomes smoother and smoother the faster it goes. 160mph+ is almost like being stationary, with the scenery rushing past!

The rushing noise is wind noise and your side windows bending in from the pressure differential.

Definately go for lowering - I have Eibach progressive springs and the car is much more stable at speed.
Not sure about wider tyres. I have 235/45/17 at the front and I think they are too wide and they do tend to tramline at times.

The best tyre combinations (road use) for the C4 are;
225/245 on 16 inch wheels and
225/255 on 17 inch rims.
The wider the front tyres on a C4 the less the understeer by introducing oversteer. If you go too wide at the front on a C4 you will tend to oversteer causing the PDAS to activate more often and put you into some sticky situations. In the wet the PDAS may not be able to catch it.
It can get very uncomfortable when you are correcting for oversteer and suddenly massive understeer is dialled in.
