Considering a 964 build...

The stock 964 engine with improve breathing (intake and exhaust) along with a good ECU is capable of turning out around 300HP without any other internal modifications.
if you get a shop to do rebuild cost goes up - but stick with a stock rebuild and the add a good exhaust system and modify intake. Order the Motec 84 system for the 964 from Ninemeister (Colin) and get that installed and you will have what you want.

3.6 vs 3.8 mod
thats pretty high to go to 3.8 - there are 2 options 1. Slip in 2. Bore in/ machine in. First skip option 1- not a good choice for longevity. Bore in cost about the same but you have they extra expense of machine work. I personally think your 3.8 expense is rather on the high side. Look up a bore 3.8 mod set of pistons and cylinders - think some were in the $7k range is normal - have seen cheaper if you shop. Probably will need new rods with the piston change - think Carrillo rods will run you around $1.5k. Then machine work - i’m Guessing around $2k on the high side. Cost to put together. But, shop for parts and you can save BIG $$$
DON’t have anyone port the heads - just a light cleaning/polish on intake ( no heavy metal removal) the head flow is great as it is.

Three Wheelin'
I have 3 M64 engines and one of them will be rebuilt one to my liking = 3.6 + hot cams + ITBs
I think if you are looking for high HP you may be better off starting with a 930

I'm sure you know that you have a lot of great options for 964 engine experts here in the DFW area. And we have quite a few 964 owners, including one that just re-did his 964 engine very recently. He posts on here and is very knowledgeable and meticulous.

it's not that i'm looking for 'high hp' necessarily. i've owned an RSA before and I own a 993 currently - i just know that they are a bit down on power for my preference. i drove a 600hp 996tt last week and was left feeling that it was quite uneventful and an immediate danger to my license. it reminded me of my previous 997S, which i sold because it also left me flat - just too capable and, for me, somewhat boring on a daily basis. I'm more of a 'drive the **** out of a slower car' than a 'drive a fast car slow' guy. i love the 964/993 platform, but both need more power. a 964 with near .2GT3 power would be an unbelievable ride to me. my thoughts now are to dial back the numbers and plan on a 3.6 build that delivers respectable numbers. the other issue is, i was thinking i could save some front end money on a high-mileage '64 and put the money saved into the rebuild. with numbers like $20k amd $30k being thrown around, you simply can't save that much on a high-mileage car compared to 'normal' mileage. i just wanted to build my dream '64 and have exactly what i wanted - it may still happen.
