I guess it's only money and/or personal preference, but are coilovers that are nearly 3x the cost really necessary for a 964 the OP described as "The 964 will only be a spirited driving street car, no track time"?
If anyone has a set of V3s they want to throw away because they are crap, I'll send you my address so you can donate them to a good cause. PSS10s will also be accepted, I am not picky.

I have KW Variant 3's on my daily driver (replacing PSS-9's) and I like them very much.

I’ll add besides having them on my 993 which is my daily driver and track car (which puts down respectable times with just those, tires and pads). I’ve run them on two e92 m3 and an m2. I’ve also ran JRZ, MCS and base level online. Didn’t find a huge difference for the money. Especially if they’re arent for track. And I’ve never had any kind of warranty issue or problems with the Kw v3 or Clubsports. So if it’s spending 3k or whatever on KW vs 4500 + on something else. I’d save the money

Side note if you go with the KWs... Call KW directly to 1) find out if they have them in stock in the US and 2) get great pricing. I just purchased a set of V1s last week, and Sarah @ KW gave me a price I could not pass up.

As many of the members have stated - incredible coilovers. I've been in multiple cars with their setup and all handled wonderfully.

indeed very personal
for street use, i actually prefer stock shocks on 964 (just not the SUV ride ht look)
i really disliked KWV3. it felt like pogo stick
my MCS was butter on or off track
yes i realize there is a price difference. but if i dont like how they work, than one penny more is one penny wasted.

Any adjustable shock needs to be optimized for best ride & handling and thats the responsibility of the vendor/installer to do that.

MCS's are a major step above KW's (and my personal favorite), but more expensive and some folks simply don't have the budget for that.

I do think Variant 3's ride better than PSS9/10 and thats a consideration where the roads are not perfect.

If you are going for KW i'd go for the Clubsport as it has the valving from the race damper which is a lot better than the V3. It's not JRZ or Moton but the gap between these and the KW clubsport is a fair bit less than that of the V3. For value for money that's where i'd go.

I rode in a well sorted 964 on V3's that was lower than RS ride height and the front end never stopped bouncing. I was very surprised. Maybe it could have been improved with some adjusting but it was like riding on the back of Flipper.

I have KW variant 3's on my 964 and it's been 3 years or so with them. No complaints. 100% spirited street driving and I find the set up to be a nice mix compliant and responsive. Very pleased with the quality.

I think the ride height may have been the issue. KWs have to be TÜV certified and thus they don’t go as low as other other brands. In fact, in their instruction they give a minimum height that you must respect if you want the best performance and not void the warranty. If the 964 you described was lower than RS, perhaps the V3s were below the minimum allowed by KW and bottoming out? I know I took my current measurements before ordering my KWs to make sure I was within their recommended specs.

I had pretty much the same struggle when deciding to replace my worn suspension. I drive my car for enjoyment, lots of great mountain roads here. I do not plan to track.
I'm pretty well versed in dialing in suspensions and am familiar with dampening and rebound adjustment, so I'm not afraid of those options.
Ohlins North America is here in my back yard and I have friends who work there. Even with a Bro Deal Discount, I just couldn't justify spending so much money for something I really didn't need nor could utilize to its full potential. The extra several thousand saved could go towards a paint job, or new seats, or something else.
I could have spent more but I was swayed to go with the KW Variant 1. I ride with my car set just below RS ride height (from stock 2.5" front and 2" rear, 17" wheels) and have found ZERO to complain about with my choice. I also appreciate the set and forget simpleness of the V1's.

Believe me, I'd like to have a set of Ohlins but I don't necessarily need them, by any means.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the replies. I had PSS9s years ago on my 993 and was not impressed. Some bumps felt harsh at times.

I took the plunge and ordered the V3s and will get to work on them this month.

I plan to do RS height not lower. Sticking with my D90s too! I'll report back when done.

Agreed, that is why I mentioned the ride height. There's no question they are great coilovers for most applications.
