Getting used to the new color: Cobalt
I’m back, the next chapter has begun.
After 11 years in the same 964, it feels strange to be driving in another car. It was not easy, but a found what I was looking for. Boy has the market changed in the last 10 years. My previous Slate Grey car sat on the lot for months while I built up the courage to buy it. With this market, it’s all about buying a car from a private sale. Many of you provided great advice along the way, one of the best quotes was “buy the seller, not the car”. That could not be more correct… I bought this beauty from Rudy’s collection, and I’m proud to say that it’s been “Rudified”. He made the whole process so easy, and much more re-assuring than it otherwise would be. In case you are wondering, he’s culling down his 964 collection to focus more on 993s and old BMWs. I very feel fortunate that I got this one!
So what are the details…
First of all, it has half the mileage of my previous car, with lots recent maintenance and perfect skin!
1991 Carrera 2 @ 74,895 miles
Complete top end overhaul/reseal @ 64K
New clutch/flywheel
5 speed
Fresh top/clutch/flywheel/suspension
993 TT brake set up
I need to confirm the rim sizes (front 235 on 8? & 275 on 9 ½? If not, then 7 ½ & 9)
Euro pre-muffler bypass, and primary bypass (sounds very good!)
Stone chip free (paint work on most panels)
Sport seats, with cobalt piping and trim throughout car.
Trip computer (didn’t have it before, love seeing MPH under the screaming tach gauge)
Since it’s been Rudified, there’s not much left for me to do… so I will focus under the skin first. Will add stiffer motor mounts, transmission mount, steering rack brace, and of course a golden rod and short shifter (all tested on my previous car and really increased the connection and response). I had a lot of fun hot rodding my Slate Grey car, but this car looks so original and clean, that I’m going to leave it alone for a while. It’s literally like looking at 1991 again, so I’m not going to mess with it.
One final note about the color. I've had a Slate Grey car (blacked-out) for years. Sure, it got looks and thumbs up from the occasional enthusiast. The response to this car has been next level, with lots and lots of thumbs up, especially from women. Everyone that looks at the car always has a huge smile on their face and start telling me about their own favorite car. There’s a very positive vibe around this color! Speaking of, my wife never really showed much interest in the previous car, but now all of a sudden wants to drive this car?!

I'm guessing those are 7.5" and 9" MM Cup 1 reps looking at the stamping on the rim and how far the front wheels are pushed out (assuming no spacers).
I picked up my 1990 Slate grey C2 from Rudy about 4.5 years ago in much the same fashion. I put a WTB post on this forum, and he reached out to me. Hopefully, you had a chance to come down here and check out his collection. It's worth the trip and is much more impressive in the flesh than in any of the videos circulating around the web.
I also totally agree with your statement about "buy the seller, not the car." You can't help but feel that no short cuts are made for any of the cars that pass through Rudy's collection.

The only bummer of the whole process was that I didn't personally get to meet Rudy and see the collection. That definitely would have been the cherry on top.
I had it safely shipped out in a enclosed single hauler. Houston to Chapel Hill, NC in one day (two drivers tag-teaming it)!
Front is a little too low. Tires rub the wheel liners on bumpy roads...
Paint has a huge amount of color shift. Sometimes really nice darkish blue, all the way to very purple.
Very shinny Euro-pre muffler cat shield
Rudy even reinstalled the engine tray!

Gorgeous car, and congratulations on the purchase! I've seen Rudy's collection in person as I'm in Houston, and that car was always an eye-catcher. Cobalt suits the car so nicely. Hopefully this will make moving on from your previous car a little less painful. I still can't imagine how gut-wrenching that must have been.

Just from looking at the pictures you just posted, could you maybe adjust caster to give you a little more clearance in the front fender well?
If you're going to change ride height, you might need an alignment anyways.

HUGE CONGRATS on finding an amazing replacement! Cobalt is at the top of my favorite Porsche colors, the color shift is very unique and when polished it is a jaw dropper!
I’m curious what tire sizes are on the car, the sidewall seems a bit large?
Can’t wait to see you put your touches on the car, I’m sure wheels and other minor cosmetics will eventually haunt your mind

Before I bought it I Rennlist searched "Cobalt" to learn more. Of course I read everything I could find from Anthony!

The earlier cobalt of the 90's was a very unique and difficult color to replicate. It consists of 10 colors (experts tell me the best colors of the glasurit line mixed together) It is much lighter in color overall with a lot of pink and purple metal flake in it. Color shifting is extreme depending on the car. I have never seen any 2 cobalt blue cars shift the same. Some shift far more than others. I have been told mine shifts more than most they have seen. Of course only making it harder to match.
I was told because these were 2 stage vs three stage paints of today that they mixed mica in with the color that would cause it to shift. Vs spraying a separate mica layer between color and clear. The more the mica the more the color shift. In the 90's these cars were all hand painted with their 26 stage paint process and the end result depended on how much effort and mica was added. For almost all metallic colors very few are identical to another painted with the same color code.
When the 993's came out the paint code remained the same but by then most of the paints had switched to water base and the paint process was changed becoming more automated. This regulated how the paint was mixed and the cobalt of the 993's shifted far less than the 964's. by the time the 996 came out the paint process was completely automated and if you park a 996 in cobalt next to my car they are similar but barely shift in comparison and the 996's are all very similar in color one to the next.
The 997 is a completely different paint code and is not pearlescent like the earlier paints. It is far darker in color and looks more like Iris with some hints of cobalt of the 90's than actual cobalt but still a fantastic color. I find whenever I see a boxster or 997 painted in cobalt I am shocked to see that it is called cobalt because it doesn't look anything like my car.
I added the pictures to try to show the different colors. Although my car changes from dark blue to almost pink depending on where the sun is in the sky the purple and pink in the last 2 pictures is close to how it looks in its lighter phase. (purple door 2nd to last and nearly pink fender last picture) Although these pictures do not show it correctly. the newer cars do not do this at all and my car next to the newer cars looks like a totally different color 97% of the time.

Rear: 275 (no spacer)
I'm going to have the settings checked.
I removed the wiper and debadged the car. Will install a wiper delete plug soon.
