Catalytic converter question
Has anyone ever hollowed out an OEM cat basically turning it into a bypass ? Just wondering how much work it would be, if I’d have to cut it open etc. I have no idea what the inside looks like. Thanks and happy Friday!!

Used cats are a dime a dozen and very cheap. Bypass pipes are much more expensive. Not that the couple hundred bucks extra really matters, but a hollowed our cat also looks original, has the proper flanges, 02 bung etc and visually is oem correct. You can buy 2 cats for the price of one aftermarket bypass pipe. Plus I’ve run out of stuff to fix so I’m looking for a new project as an excuse to spend more time in the garage !

The cat innard is just a spiral wound sheet of ribbed steel that is coated in stainless steel that is held together with a jacket(pipe) of stainless steel. The easiest way was to cut the ends off with a plasma torch, remove the entire assembly and weld the ends back on but at this point the jacket has corroded itself to the main body. So you are left trying to hollow it out. Which is a nightmare because the spiral unwinds as you remove material. I am all for DIY but there are usually dirt cheap bypass pipes on ebay that sell for not much more than what you'll spend in tools/materials and labor.

correct it was not cut in half, cleaned out then welded back together. i dont recall exactly how it was done but if i wanted one today i'd just buy a bypass, and I dont think Russ would even consider taking on the task today...remember this was done in the 90"s

some day I'll learn just to shut up and read what people are saying. They ask you something but they are telling you something else. you want a test pipe I'll give it to you just pay shipping and it bolts right on with the bung for the 02 sensor.
