Not sure why you should smell gas near engine unless something was leaking. Check for leaks first. If you tried pressing gas pedal, you may have flooded it. Let it rest for a day.
Can you read fault codes?
What is condition of battery? Put it on charger anyway while car is resting.
You can pull a plug wire and use a spare plug to check for spark.
Let us know how you're doing with this.

Oh boy! Where do I start with this one.....
Have a look at this thread first: I had this issue after washing my car and jumped to the conclusion that it was related to that car washing. Not so.
After many hours working on it, hundreds of dollars in parts, it came down to a bad speed reference sensor.
To make matters worse, I had replaced that sensor with a brand new one that also turned out to be bad!
Fuel, Air, Spark
So, check the standard stuff. Since it cranks but doesn't fire up, DME is your first stop.
Our engines won't fire up until the ECU sees the right speed at the flywheel and air coming into the motor.
Once fired up, it'll begin looking at the other sensors to know how much to adjust the fuel and timing. But you have to have the engine turning and air coming in first.
So, before you spend a lot of money on replacing parts like I did, check everything out. Get an oscilloscope to read the speed sensor and check out the air meter.
If those check out, move onto the next stuff.
Good luck!

specialist , he also suspected the after market alarm system.... will keep you posted.

You can check the the flywheel speed sensor with a multi meter.
To test this, you open the DME (under drivers seat) and used a multimeter set to AC voltage, across pins 47 & 48 of the large plug. it's supposed to read 3 volts. Mine was 0, so needed to be replaced.
