Tiptronic 964 ?
I know for many the tiptronic in an earlier 911 is just not right, but I have been searching for a black on black without much luck so I’ve been thinking……how about buying a relatively less expensive 964 tiptronic and doing some lightening and engine upgrades to make it “peppy”
any one done such a thing?...thoughts?

Hey I have a tiptronic that I'm doing all the usual mods to just like the manual guys. I love it! Currently taking all the weight out of it. I'm sure a good transmission guy could tweak the trans too.

Seriously though, you can pretty much do all the same mods to a Tip car that you can with a MT car. Remove all the weight you want (rear seats, carpet, sound insulation, rear wiper, power windows, door cards, stereo, A/C etc...... Install a full race suspension and bigger brakes...... All the engine mods that your local government will allow free flowing intake and exhaust, bore to 3.8, new chip etc... Anything is possible, just send money.
But a Tip will always be what. 30-60 pounds heavier than an identical MT? And a TIP will always be 1 second or so slower 0-60 than a MT. But will YOU be slower in a Tip? Depends on how and where you drive and your skills. TBH I would probably be faster on a track in a Tip than in a MT, especially one that requires a lot of shifting. In AX I think I would be faster in a MT because usually the only shift is 1 to 2 and then the MT responds a bit quicker than the Tip, until I learn to drive my Tip better.
What do you want? A loud, light weight fun track car, then start wtih a MT..... or a cool classic sports car that with all the luxuries of a modern auto like PS, PW, CC, AC, OBC etc... then start with a Tip.
The biggest issue I have had with the Tip was actually finding one in a Coupe. Plenty avail in cabs but in my search they seemed to be pretty rare in a coupe.
Good luck and keep us posted.

One way to be faster in a Tip is keep the revs up and left foot brake. I had a '91 964 Tip, and in '99 I got Boxster fever and traded it for a 2000 Tip Boxster. Huge difference between the '91 and '00, and even more between the '00 and the new ones. To me the early Tip is and automatic that you can shift, and the newer ones (especially PDK) are like a manual you don't have to clutch and move a gear lever.
The factory statement on Tip is basically you'll be a tad slower but more consistent. In '98 had the rare opportunity to ride with 3 different factory test drivers on the test track at Weissach (in the new yet to be released 996), the fastest of the 3 was driving a Tip.

When I first drove my 91 Tip coupe I thought well that’s not very inspiring. So I did some reading and found mention of the kick down switch under gas pedal. Which I soon discovered was inoperable due to the lever that pushes it was frozen. I had the car hooked to a Durametric no codes shown. I got it working and it was a big inmprovement. 😎 then just driving and learning how to get the most out of it.
A whole lot of fun 😁😛

In mine when you put the foot down not much happens until when it's in second gear it really takes off. I've read about the lock up converter engaging or something!

If you keep it in gear 3 it will start up moving in 1st gear. If in drive it starts in 2nd gear.

Thanks everyone for your input. I decided that I am lazy and busy while driving, so I purchased a black C2 tip. I’ll let you know how it goes.
thanks again.
