My 964
Hi from New Zealand guys. I suppose I should introduce myself, the racists at work call me "dingo" because im Australian haha! I moved to nz for work 3 years ago, I've always been a muscle car guy but I am now a Porsche fanatic! This is my first 964 I bought back in June and am slowly modifying.1991 c2, tiptronic, 117k
I look foward to sharing and learning from you guys and girls. I'll post photos as I go.https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...797e3aba7e.jpg First time she came home! |

Noce!!! Very few Coupe Tips. I had a hard time finding mine. Enjoy.
|
Cheers! Your car looks great, quite like the yellow interior. I know manuals are more desirable but changing gears seems like hard work to me!
|
Taking new wheels in for tyres tomorrow morning, hopefully get them back by the afternoon. Can't wait to see what they look like and hopefully I have selected the correct offset!

New wheels are on!
Spent the morning bolting on my new wheels, need a small spacer in the front as the calipers only have about 2mm clearance.https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...d81ad75109.jpg

The black wheels look right on the car. Looking forward to seeing your build. If I'm reading the catalogue correctly the 7" fronts have a 40 offset. The offset up front on 7" wheels is typically 55mm, so I'm guessing 15mm spacers will do nicely. At that width you can find spacers with built in studs, and keep it simple.

Your car looks awesome foxman! What % is your window tint? I've been thinking of tinting mine as I get sunburned every time I drive and go home redder than my car Haha!

Dingo, If you haven’t got keyless entry, then a Tore T-Lock is a must. A T-Lock saves your key mechanism, and makes for an easy entry and lock on departure. S |

hey foxman! Yeah I knew from the moment I bought it how I wanted it to look. Thanks, I have so many ideas just not enough money! Yeah the front have 40 offset, I have ordered a 3mm spacer to clear the calipers as it's pretty tight! And I may need to put a bit of camber on the front when I lower it. It's not quite the right offset but it's not bad. I thought that too but I'm pretty sure using a 3mm spacer on a 40 offset I'll end up with a 37mm offset? I could be wrong

Highly recommend getting on amazon and getting the caliper paint. Best 20$ you will spend. Fun, relaxing project.

You're absolutely right Dingo, my late night error. Spacers will push the wheels further out, thereby decreasing the offset. It's a good thing that your wheels are only 7" wide up front, Yeah I'm glad they are only 7" will be interesting when I lower the car. Thanks, the prior owner tinted the windows for the harsh Florida sun. I don't know the precise tint, but it is quite dark. It Looks a bit out of place now that the car is in New England, but it's part of the car's persona now. |

Engine pad removal
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...53d51f1a9c.jpg
Removed the engine insulation pad today, i think it looks great, Adds a bit of colour to the engine bay. Went for a drive around the block and didnt really notice much difference in noise. Will cutt the studs off tomorrow to finish the job. |
Love the side profile shot above. The Fuchs and wing really make it unique.
I tore my sound pad out years ago. Didn't notice much difference. Have been hesitant to cut the studs off, maybe one day. (They are not as noticeable since my car is Slate Grey). Just noticed you don't have any engine bay stickers? |
Dingo,
Car is looking great, and it looks like you are having a ball (great summer too). I removed my sound pad, it was doing nothing besides snowing crap onto the motor as it was so tired. It certainly looks a lot tidier without the sound pad hanging down. However, I would think long and hard about cutting off the studs. Once they are cut off, they are gone, difficult to reverse engineer. When I drop the engine (as you do) that is maybe the time to refit the sound pad, and the look back to stock. The option of keeping the studs still exists for you or the next owner. Just saying, your car, enjoy. S |
Looks awesome! I agree with Spokes, keep the studs. Deleting the rear blower motor next would really open things up back there.
Keep up the good work! |

You can take the snorkel off. Easily disconnects from the air box if you want to experiment with the look. Twists right off.
Is the airbox cover stock, or has it been Swiss cheesed? |

Not important at all. I actually like the clean look. Make it your own! Oh sweet I feel the same, love to see nothing but a car, wheels and an engine! |

sorry for the late reply. We had a blizzard here today and I've been behind another kind of air cooled engine blowing snow all day. I also dont don't like the look of the 964 snorkel. 993's have an optional sport box with a bit of chrome to spruce up the engine bay. One alternative is the Evo Hi Flow Cold Air Intake. Looks great, but some have voiced concern over the location drawing hot air. http://www.eagleday.com/964evohicoai.html https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...72871fe058.png Evo Another alternative if you like carbon is the RS style which retains the snorkel height https://www.design911.co.uk/mobile/#part;id=7571 https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...4e158bedf6.png RS style duct (replica) And not that anyone can really see the side of the airbox, but I really didn't care for much for the Swiss cheese look. I ran across a photo of a box with the entire side cut out, and that was my inspiration. Quick work with a dremel. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...4079bb2675.png when will Rennlist fix the photo bug? |

I think there is far too much clutter in the engine bays of these cars! Thanks heaps for the detailed reply. I have decided on the direction I wanto head. I really like the tidy and simple look of the pod filter tucked away up the back. Tidys things right up. Surely there would be so much air blown around under the hood that no matter what you do you would suck a bit of hot Air! I think I'll pull the Air box off tomorrow and make a template of the Air flow meter and make an adaptor myself and grab a pod filter. Back at work on Monday ☹ so will be a nice project for next weekend! Cheers 👍 |

Looks like the fuel vapor recovery canister, is it leaking? Your frunk looks absolutely spotless! Order some Gummi Pfledge for the seals, it will seriously make them look and feel new again. |

That black stuff looks like some kind of undercarriage spray that one of the previous owners added, what a nightmare that must be to remove. |

Hahaha undercarriage spray! Yep oil spokes. It doesn't seem to leak much but I'd say it used to when Mr miyagi owned It!

Hi John, I just read the regulations on third brakelights in nz. Not important I know but just thought it sounded funny!

NZ new typically had a small one added to the top of the rear screen. Imports sometimes added the 993 rear light bar.

Very underwhelming! I've removed the engine under tray, sound pad, rear wiper. Installed rs carpet with no insulation and removed the spare wheel for weigh in! Original weight was 1380..https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...9c27f75d5c.jpg
60kg loss, pretty dissapointed! |
60kg loss equates to about an 8 horse power gain - and you're just getting started Dingo. You'll save another 40-50kg when you lose the seats, 15-20kg with a light weight battery, and so on. It all adds up!

The battery is one of the easiest ways to lose weight, it’s too bad its way out front but any weight loss is going to be a plus. Seats are also easy as others noted. Don’t get discouraged though, as already noted the reductions will add up. |

D, bugger! Probably not worth the risk of driving it. Upside to maintain your engine bay with the fan replacement. Paint the shroud, check the alternator and brushes. |

As for when it happened, I reckon your eye just hasn’t caught it before. It was there but not seen. I see everything now on these cars because I’ve been there done that with so many parts. You don’t want me judging a concours! Unfortunately the only new option is Porsche. With freight, customs etc they are about NZ$1,200 landed. I’ll check my spares. I think I have a used one off the Silver C4. |

I don’t think anyone is going to advise driving it around much because that crack is quite long and the possibility of total failure is high which would damage the shroud and decklid. That said you’ve likely been driving with it like this for a while. Your car your money. You can mark it all and check for progression As for when it happened, I reckon your eye just hasn’t caught it before. Any extra damage to the deck lid would probably tidy it up a bit haha I looked through all my old photos, I knew there were a few small hairline cracks but nothing like this. I'd say it's gotten worse. Haha you are like me inspecting someone else's plumbing, I'm like Satan  Awesome I'll send you a text |

Full clay bar, wet sand where needed and polish. Then went back in the shed where she will hibernate for a while until I accumulate some parts (and money haha) and I'm ready to install new engine fan :bigbye: |
Wait, you just sanded and polished the car and you only posted one pic of the finished product!!!! Single stage Guards Red is stunning after a proper polish, it’s the only paint that looks try wet and ready to drip off the car. What polish did you use? |

Mate, I was actually in shock after I had done the first panel. The paint looks like hot jam or something haha you are right it looks like it could drip off the car! I just used a generic fine polish from the local auto store, probably could have splashed out and bought an expensive one but It came up almost perfect. |
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...829962e804.jpgThe paint is like glass, only a few minor scratches that will probably never come out. Heres mrs dingo and i

Ok you have a good excuse, I’ll be patient  That last shot looks great! I would definitely advise against chasing the deeper scratches, they won’t be that noticeable and you would lose way too much paint trying to level everything around them. |

Yes definately will be leaving the deep scratches, pretty sure im the only one that notices them anyway. One of them actually looks like it's under the paint or something... it's quite odd! |

Some people will hate this..... but I love it!
I have cut the air con bracket off to tidy things up. It was an absolute pig of a job and I wouldn't recommend doing it with the engine in! As it's good Friday no stores are open so tomorrow I'll tidy up the paint on the engine tin. Not sure if anyone reads these in detail. But if anyone is reading I'd like to know if there is any trick to remove the bracket for the secondary muffler? Ive read that you can lose one of the spacers in the power steering pump area. It seems like there are 2 13mm bolts and a smaller one, would this be correct? Reason for removing is im installing a gpipe and cant see the point of leaving it on. Thanks

I ran a G pipe for the last year, and I have just put back the secondary muffler. So my set up is stock for NZ/SA/Sin, which is a cat-bypass, primary and secondary muffler. So, the cat by-pass will arguably give the HP gain. Why did I go back? While I prefer a bit more "bark" I disliked the G pipe sound. IMHO the G pipe delivers a deep truck sound, some say like a WRX Subaru. The setup now delivers more of flat six sound, with a nice growl at WOT. So, I suggest before attempting to remove the secondary bracket, try the G pipe for a while, you may like it, then make a call. I am still looking for nirvana for an exhaust note. My ex 993 with x-pipe and maxflo is the bench mark. S https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...73866041e5.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...a5ebff9b1b.jpg |

To be honest I just disconnected the secondary muffler and started the car up for a minute to get an idea on sound haha I quite like the idle but I'll find out once the car is running again and make a decision. You make a good point and that's what I'll Do! I found a thread on here where someone was welding all kinds of different aftermarket mufflers on.. Not sure what kind of noise he ended up with!? |

I too love the clean look, especially in the engine bay. Jealous of non-AC, but it's just too hot in North Carolina for that. Not to spend your money, but are you thinking of doing a blower motor bypass down the road? Are you keeping the engine pad tabs, or are you going saw them off? Love how you're cleaning the car up. You deserve to go for a long drive soon! |

You deserve to go for a long drive soon! I'm the Same! Love things neat and tidy, unsure how far I'll go with the car at the moment so I'll be sticking to bolt on mods only until I work out my long-term goal. So the sound pad studs will be staying until then. Back in my hot rodding days I would hide all the wiring under the fenders and delete absolutely everything I didn't want. Just not sure yet... You can spend my money, like fantasy football! It gives me ideas! Definately will be installing the heater bypass, I'll get the 993 one like Foxman. Can't wait to get it back on the road again, don't think I've had a decent drive since Christmas! |

So that was pretty easy, I'm really glad I did things properly. I didn't end up buying the rs pulley as I found out it's about $300 to get one to New Zealand and I have more important things to do at the moment.
I will however send the pulley halves off to get powder coated black next week. It's raining here until next Thursday and I snapped the head off one of those stupid Allen head bolts (anybody know the part number?) that go into the fan so unfortunately I won't be driving it but I'm just happy it's going again! Cheers! |

The original is a stud with a nut. The update is an Allen head bolt. The metal is soft on these. You need GOOD quality Allen keys to work on your car. Otherwise you are courting ‘incidents’ with rounded out heads. You also need to use a torque wrench to avoid overdoing things. |

Out and about looking at houses at the moment, lots of stopping and starting, first time I've really drove the car properly. Quite enjoying it. However last time I went to start the car it wound over for at least 10 seconds and once we were driving again the windows wouldn't go down and heater fan wouldn't work either. At the next open home I pulled up and turned car off but started it up straight away to check. It started fine and everything was back to normal.
Any ideas what I should be looking for? |

Picked Mrs dingo up from work tonight in the Porsche. I think it's the first time I've driven the car in the dark. One thing I noticed is it's very dark inside.
Does anyone know if there is meant to be a light near the shifter to tell me what gear I'm in? |
Dean, your car should have a gear indicator on the speedo.
|

Hey John, yes I have the indicator on the dash. When I got in and went for the shifter I looked down and I couldn't see a thing! I was just wondering if the shift gate was meant to be illuminated or something. |
No lights around the shift gate, well not my 993 tip. You have to look at the indicator lights. |

I can totally relate to loving to drive the 964. I just can’t get enough. Everybody was out of town Saturday so I went for a 3hr drive in the twisties, came home and took a nap and upon waking up thought- hmmm I think I’ll do another. As I drive it more regularly I find I’m finally getting to know it’s character and it just gets more fun. Pete |

Yes, it's correct. You'll also need two washers for the drain plugs and to work out how you are going to torque the drain plugs correctly. The one under the case is hard to get to with a torque wrench. Torque it too little and you risk it coming undone. Torque it too much and you risk deforming the case threads. Given how little mileage you are doing, I would concentrate on doing it right than doing it quickly. You also need a big oil pan as the old oil will come out hot and quickly.
Do I even need to change the oil once a year if I only put about 1200k on It? |
Note that the plug torque level has been previously misquoted. Off the top of my head it's 35 ft/lb or 50Nm
Before you do this, check the drain plug positions. I've heard of people undoing one of the oil relief plugs by mistake. Aside from all of this, the biggest mistake people make is overfilling. An easy way to avoid this is to measure what you take out and only put that much back in, at the start. Overall a simple job if done carefully. It's slightly more than drain and refill |

Thanks John, yes that was going to be my next question, I can't find the washers either, I had a quick look on the pet also. Thinking ill buy a stock so I don't have to muck around in the future. If I do the oil change over the pit at work would it be easy to access with torque wrench?
Do I even need to change the oil once a year if I only put about 1200k on It? You need to raise the rear of the car to get the pan under the engine. Torque wrench issue is the heat exchangers getting in the way. Change oil every year no matter what mileage. I use Pentrite 10 tenths 15W 50. Lots of Zinc. |
If you aren't doing much mileage, make it a practice to get it nice and hot when you do use it. This will help with any water condensation. If you find water in the oil you first drain from the thermostat, it shows lack of use. I found the same condensation in the right hand chain tensioner on the engine I'm now rebuilding.

You want to get it to a temp where the thermostat opens i.e. gauge goes to 10pm then drops to 9pm when it opens. This allows full flow of all oil in the system.

Went to look at some seats today, all parts for the oil change are in the mail from design911 plus a few little other bits and pieces that were worn out.. Oh and mrs dingo bought me a cat bypass:rockon:
|
Cat bypass really woke my car up. Already had a primary bypass for years, but it all came together when I added the cat bypass. The sound, the throttle response. Also appreciated less heat around the engine and a couple less pounds. It did stink a bit after WOT, but it only bothered my wife... Which cat bypass? Skinny test pipe design, or larger chamber (like Fabspeed design)? Can’t remember if you’ve already have an exhaust bypass. |

Secondary bypass plus test pipe will be loud, in a good way. Just what I remember reading from past threads (narrow test pipe being louder than larger volume hollow bypass). Get ready for some rumble! Looking forward to your impressions. |

Hi guys, I'll be ordering this oil line once I have a good look to confirm it's the source of my leak. I read somewhere that I will need some special spanners to do the job. is this correct and if so what are they! Also my research tells me I'll need 2 washers part number 900 123 139 30 Just looking for wisdom before I get into it! |

Btw: as you have signaled that funds are tight, I suggest that you stick to your plan or order only after you know the line is bad. There are a lot of smaller lines that could be the cause of your leak. Find the culprit before committing to $$$ |
Another point. Every thing you touch will be dirty. If that dirt gets into the oil lines it will go through the engine before being filtered, including the tiny holes that put oil on the tappets. Block one of those and you will be up for $$$$. Be very clinical about cleanliness. |

99% sure it's the thermostat to oil filter hose. Now I just have to work out how far I wanto go with it (do i replace everything) and whether I should buy new or get this one rebuilt. I've read people have alot of trouble with new ones but have greater success getting them rebuilt. |
Nice cleanup and investigation work.

Restoring the side sills to standard along with the front and rear bumpers. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...038cce1e98.jpg And im all set for half an oil change! I'll probably pull the oil tank and tidy it up. I'll also check all the oil hoses and replace if necessary. |
I had a bit of a practice at tightening the engine sump plug as I've never used a torque wrench before. 37 ft-lbs seems very tight, I've set the torque wrench correctly.
|
D, post a pic of the torque wrench so we can see your setting. I would use NM not Ft-lbs. Metric system is so much more logical and German. I think that torque wrench has a flip side for NM. |

Oil change/oil hose replacement
Man that was stressful! Posting this in case I've missed something or stuffed something up. 7 litres of oil came from thermostat and 2 litres came from engine. I forgot to stab a hole in oil filter but think it didn't matter. Now I have to remove the oil tank and replace hoses. Please share your knowledge if I've missed anything!

Here's one for the archives! When I pulled the oil tank out I could hear something rattling around in there... I found an old piece of a dipstick! |
That happens with the old 964 dip sticks. The metal gets stressed from putting the dipstick in wrong- yes there is a right way to insert the dip....
Best thing for all of us to do is get a new 993 dip and be done, as it's twisted and has no v cuts in it and therefor won't crack like the 964 dips do. |

Any advice for removing broken mounts on the oil tank? I also broke the one on the thermostat and half is still stuck to the car! |
Well that was a mission! I barely touched the fittings and the hose tore in two pieces. I'll drop the hose off tomorrow and see if I can have it rebuilt.
Does anyone know if the end pieces are meant to swivel on the crimped part between hardline and hose? https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...52ea407df4.jpg The anaconda is out https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...abe202f348.jpg Halfway through cleaning, you can see where the hose has been rubbing, its actually worn about 5mm into the underbody coating. |
When thy rebuild your hose, make sure they "clock" the ends correctly. So match the tear up how it should be and look at both of the hard line ends and make sure the orientation one to the other is correct on the new hose once they reuse those ends.
Having a new braided line put in is easy. And a good quality braided line will be better than the hose Porsche offers new. But they orientation of those ends has to be close, if not spot on, to your original hose. And. No, the hardline is not meant to swivel in the hose. It's meant to be tight and sealed. |
Thanks for the knowledge goughary, I may have some trouble there as both of the hard ends rotate freely to the hose.
Here's what I plan to do, I'll only get the new hose crimped on to one end then I'll take it back home and fit it and mark the orientation on the other end, then go back and get that end crimped. Hopefully that would work. Yes I have read many posts on poor quality of new oil lines so hopefully this works out for me. |
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...173a81c7b5.jpg
Bit more cleaning tonight after work. Should be spotless tomorrow night then I'll attack the mounts that are stuck on. |

Like bon jovi says we're half way there! |
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...008a4101a3.jpg
Finally got the broken mount off the tank but unfortunately broke the nut off that was welded on. I don't think it matters as I could just put a nut and washer on. Next step is stripping the paint. Not sure if I'll sand blast or use paint stripper. |
Don't sand blast anything around the oil tank. Just strip and do it by hand. Much safer and less likely to make the mistake of having grit in the tank.
Be careful to prep the tank well for the paint. You won't be taking it out for a long time and you want good adhesion or it'll look like hell very quickly. A lot of stuff gets kicked up from the road and with the fumes and oils...you just want the paint to stay. |
Try Aircraft Paint Remover. Works great on brake calipers and other tough paint removal on metal. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...fa0fc5223b.png |
the new wheels and tires totally transform the car....in a good way

Thanks guys, I'll be using paint remover then. Nice project for the weekend! I'm thinking of using a black engine enamel spray, any thoughts on this? How would you flush the oil tank out? I was thinking of doing it just because I can.

I'm beginning to get more and more paranoid about cleaning everything with the oil system. Does anyone know if I can clean the inside of the oil tank? I'm thinking why can't I just put some petrol in the tank, shake it around and drain it a few times?

My fear of this is what if you dislodge a larger piece of something in the tank and it clogs an input, perhaps causing oil starvation later on. Not sure how valid my concern is, but I've always considered oil tanks/oil coolers to be something I'd prefer to pay to have properly cleaned inside/outside.

I did consider trying to adjust the position but thought it not worth it. If I remember my conclusion was that I would have had to shorten the rubber hoses to the oil tank by about 5mm to pull it up a bit and didn't really want to mees around with them. My mount had split and I have no idea how long it had been like that, probably quite a few years. In my opinion the thermostat is really held in position by all the pipes and hoses so the mount has very little effect. I did replace it anyway when I renewed all the hoses.

I also replaced the oil line from the stat to the filter and haven't noticed any interference. As I used a new Porsche line it took a bit of work to get it in without a kink so wouldn't want it sitting any higher!

Loving the new side sills! |
Now the car is running again I wanto focus on getting it sitting right and looking good. I'm not happy with how it looks at all. I think it looks too plastic and not really porsche.
Thinking I have 3 options. 1: Proper Fuchs wheels with silver lip with a ducktail. 2: Put the d90s back on and standard deck lid. 3: Cup 1s with standard decklid. All of the above sitting lower on new suspension. Also I'll get the proper original shark fins and replace my taillights and center reflector. |

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...7425cef21e.jpg These are the Fuchs I've been looking at. From d911 |
Does anybody know an economical way to lower the car? I just wanto get it sitting nice, not driving the car hard.
I have bilstein suspension all round. The front springs are green and the rear are black. The black springs in rear look original as they are very rusty compared to the fresh looking green ones up front. |
In my opinion, the ducktail would be a mistake if you eventually want an original decklid. I've been there done that. Mine cost $2,000 to import, source the hardware, fit and paint. That's fine if you have the luxury of the original decklid in storage, but you don't. I paid a kings ransom to source the spoiler, mechanics and the boxes that go under the seat, but at least I had the original decklid. You need to go a step further and find a decklid. They do come up for sale in the US, but finding someone who will crate and ship it is the next problem and it would be $$$. Save your money for that.
Re the wheels, do that after you sort the rest. The Otto Fuchsfelge are $$$. Great quality but your existing ones have the similar look. |

It really does sound like hard work sourcing an original Decklid so I'd probably wait and keep an eye on trade me.. I guess I'll start attacking things one at a time, I'm getting a bit overwhelmed! Any ideas on the lowering? |
Actually now that I think of it the front sits pretty nice so I just maybe have to lower the back. Looks like it needs to come down 2 or 3 inches.

Out with the old https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...39c69f841d.jpg In with the new! Replaced the fuel filter today. The old one was stamped 1992! So unless it was replaced 1 year from new my car is not a 1991 as i thought. I'll have to do some research. |
Good thing to do- my filter sprung a leak due to age! It was a scary moment. I had to coast down a mountain range in the middle of the night to get to where I could make a call. Not fun. Pete |

Also shows how important it is to have a fire extinguisher, that could have been alot worse. I'll have to look into one.

Finally finished painting the bottom parts black....

The black on the bumpers looks excellent, nice work! I’ve been eying my fuel filter too, I have no idea when it was last changed and I’m assuming it was done when the engine was out but you know what they say about assuming things. :o. It looks like you did some detailing while you were at it. |

What about spraying plasti-dip on that tail? Then if you didn’t like it you could always just peel it off and if you decide to keep- it looks more like rubber. Pete |

I’ve never tried it so I can’t say how long it lasts. Just kinda thinking out loud. If your hesitant about spraying paint it would be a good way to get an idea of how it would look. If you liked it you could strip it off and do a semigloss black. |

Anyone have a spare standard Decklid sitting around, that they would be willing to send to new Zealand!?

My experience is pay up for the whole package. Even small parts missing add up quickly. |
Thanks for that john, however I totally agree. I really would just like to buy a whole unit ready to paint and bolt on. Keep an ear out for me!

Will do. In the meantime, look to see what part of the electronics and harness you have. It’s a lot easier if you already have the spoiler controller. |

It’s under the right hand seat on a RHD 1990 model. I think it shifted in later models to under the dash. |

Started building a mount for a battery cutoff switch as I only use the car once a month or so and the battery keeps going flat. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...1e861bc2c4.jpg I plan on mounting it here on the chassis rail above the battery which is good as it will cover this scratch! |

Done! I'm happy now that I can get the car out for a drive at any time without having to steal a battery from one of my other cars! However, with the battery disconnected I have found that the drivers side door lock doesn't work... |
Yeah- its kinda a bit of work with the switch in the trunk- esp with the factory alarm. I added one as well especially with the winters here when the car is laid up for 1/3 of the year........:( How often do you get out in that thing? I put a good load of kilometers on my car in just a year. If I have even just a bit of time I’ll take it out for a good stomp. No good long roads here but lots of fun local stuff if you get out at the right time of the day. |

About 10k a month :icon501: I just don't have the time to drive it, however Christmas holidays (summer) is when I use the car non stop, and my parents come over every January so I think it will get plenty of use this year. Last time the parents came over the fan had a crack so didn't get to use it :banghead: Plenty of good roads here, I'm looking forward to Christmas holidays this year! |

Spent the morning modifying the crappy chrome centre caps that came with my wheels. A bit plain but just makes it look a bit more finished. |

Think this will be my next job, seems to be leaking from the valve cover somewhere. Think I'll remove the engine tins for powdercoating and do the valve covers while I'm at it. |

Met a guy today at the local auto parts store, he has this sweet 91 c2 tip. Interestingly it was optioned with no sunroof or rear wiper. Love meeting people with 964s and seeing their cars. It's really motivated me to try and find a standard decklid locally after seeing how good they look in the flesh! |
Do they make a Porsche center cap for your wheels? When I was much younger I preferred the wings on the 911, mainly because it “looked” faster. In my early 20’s I started appreciating the more focused, smoother lines of the wingless 911 and it is definitely my preference now. My opinion of course but I do think yours would look even better without the wing. Looking forward to seeing the new progress Dingo. |

just preparing for my cat bypass I notice my cat has another connection which I've not seen in anyone else's DIY threads :( |
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...59b4f79f9c.jpg
it comes up into the white connector near the engine mount |
After a bit of research I found it is a sensor for the cat light on the dash which is apparantly on Japanese cars only! So I'm presuming I can leave it unplugged when I install the bypass.
|
Yes- Just remove it at the white connector. My car had this as well. Pete |

Absolutely loving the new ride height and the cat bypass however the car seems to blow a lot of smoke since I put the cat bypass on. I've read that a steve wong chip will sort this so I'll put that on the list. |
Just thought I'd add these pics and information to this thread in case someone is reading this in years to come and wonders how the car got lower.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...f3b0374b49.jpg H&R lowering springs from design 911. |
I recently had a lot of smoke coming from under the car when pulling up to a stop and I thought it was time I find out what oil leaks I have and see if I can fix them, so I spent 5 hours under the car yesterday with 5 cans of degreaser, various toothbrushes and dust brushes! Not clean to dingo spec but clean enough to see what's leaking. Once I sort the leaks I'll clean it up good.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...37c3f1a87b.jpg I found both lower valve covers to be leaking, which is no problem as I have the seals kit and I'm getting them powder coated next week along with my engine tins. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...164eaa547d.jpg Seals kit https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...693335b413.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...8977f5866b.jpg Both lower valve covers leaking The only other leak was in the pictures below, which is near one of the heads, I'm guessing it cant be fixed in the car, but I'd like to hear from anyone what the problem may be. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...a828063686.jpg Very minor weeping from here https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...0b149c9b71.jpg Close up of leak Thanks for reading |

No have already put those on with the new cat bypass. These ones are about 3" long. They might have put them in by mistake?

Just thinking about it they actually look like the 2 bolts for the heater blower... which seems weird they would supply new ones!

If anyone is interested I am at my first stop on a 3 day trip in the 964. Doing approx 1400km on the south island of nz. Pictures don't do the roads and scenery justice, it's absolutely stunning.

They did an awesome job and I'll keep the windscreen in. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...d45f74c11a.jpg Rainy afternoon coming into the west coast, can see my chipped windscreen on the right. Tried to take a picture of the repair but it's barely noticable! Have a 450km drive tomorrow, down the west coast. Really looking forward to it! |
Enjoy the drive Dingo, this is truly the best part of 964 ownership! The scenery does look beautiful, actually lots of similarities to Southern California. Make sure you stop and get some more pictures when you can. |

Yeah- lots of cars on the roads here usually too. Which is why I want to go up north. Japanese are all ow drivers too. I’ve had to go into 1st to pass on occasion. My car is in pieces while I try to figure out what path Togo with the motor. I took it out plannning on resealing it and having a good look over decided it best to tear it down- but just haven’t had time to make any decent progress for the last few weeks so I’m kinda worried about getting back together before spring. Lookin more like summer at this point which is a bit stressful. Really want to get back in the seat! |
What a great drive! I took the more southern route from Christchurch to Queenstown in a rental when I visited over 10 years ago. Stopped at Mt Cook along the way. Came back up the southern coast on the way back. Unforgettable...

Another good day on the road about 1050km driven so far and the car hasn't missed a beat! Smooth sailing today, came from the middle to the east coast for the night. On the way we stopped at the National transport and toy museum and the Highlands motorsport park and museum which were pretty cool. Here are some pics from today if anyone is interested.

you are in new zealand yes? and you have a LHD car, imported from somewhere else, obviously, and what are the rules as far as having LHD there and i guess australia as well, i thought they were very strict as far as what side the steering wheel is...is there an age ruling or...? and it looks like a really great place to drive, especially in our favorites...
|
Well this has been quite a satisfying job. Still unsure if I have the confidence to adjust the valves before I put them back on. The reason for removing them is 3 of them were leaking.

I love traveling in the 964. I never get tired of driving it! Haven’t done more than a day or 2 at a time but would love to go for a long trip up to Hokkaido which is relatively unpopulated. Enjoy! Of all our Japan touring, Hokkaido easily beats most too. We went touge hunting there last year, and could not believe everything from the locals, food, roads, onsen, views - it just kept going. We will be going back... but here's a summary. By the way, reading this thread is great Dingo as an inspiration for 964 maintenance and enthusiasm. |

thanks, i have been wondering...
[QUOTE=Dingo;15631954]Yes in NZ, imported car from Japan. I'm not sure on the laws here I'm just glad I can have it. I'd never be able to afford a rhd, well I could but I dont think I'd enjoy the car. I know in Australia the car must be 30 years old before you can register it and drive on the road. It really is a beautiful place to drive! Once I get the car mechanically sound again I'm taking off again for another big drive :burnout:[/Q

Are you doing the work yourself or do you have a decent mechanic? I know exactly what you mean, I'd probably end up putting it back together so I could drive it! Whatever you do I'm excited to read about it  |

I just reread and realized I didn’t catch your question before. I have a awesome mechanic and he basically has given me the run of the shop for the winter. Anything I can’t do he just teaches me how to right then and there. Anything I can’t finish helll button up for me and just charge for that. All tools available and a lift. Im super lucky to have such a good (factory trained) buddy.

The more I drive the car the more my idea of my perfect 911 evolves! Now that I have the spare wheel, tyre inflator and jack in the frunk I thought it would be good to cover it for my luggage and whatever I put in there. I spent the afternoon making a floor! I'll cover it with carpet tomorrow.https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...4fa4299542.jpg

Haha :) lucky man! I wish I could be. Not a chance now with their policy. |

Looking forward to the next touring pics then!

Excellent thread and progress thus far! After seeing your frunk I definitely want to remove my carpet, a board for luggage, and detail. The fan shroud looks great with the spark plug wires routed behind the fan. So glad you posted a pic I’ve been looking for a decent pic that shows how it was done. |

Yes the leads I only did temporarily because I couldn't get the plastic thing back on then I realised it looked tidy haha! |
I have a lot of other priorities using up my time and money at the moment so I have purchased a new cheaper 964 to work on when I have some spare time!

So I've acquired some seats in poor condition, need some opinions on how I restore them. I can get new covers and cushions for about the same price as getting them recovered however I want. I'm thinking I'll spray them guards red with leather covers and possibly red tartan cushions... any advice or pics would be great!https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...d29b8a8973.jpg
Recaro spg |
I did a red and black houndstooth insert on my pole positions with black leather and red stitching. Its a lot of red, but I like it.I also have the original gray alcantara inserts in the event I ever feel like its too much red...
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...e99d4396f4.jpg taking pictures of seats while installed is not easy. lol https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...f3265ae256.jpg I had matching rears made, but didn't glue them in. They have a velcro bottom to keep them planted on the RS carpets in the back when I've got them in the car. |
That looks great Matt, that combo would look good in Dingo’s 964 too
|
Looking good Dingo!
Matt the red and black houndstooth looks bad *** |
Thanks guys! Matt those seats look awesome, especially the subtle red stitching! I'm still undecided what I'm going to do. Was hoping Udo would get on here! Going to see a mate tomorrow who has a trimming business so I'll see what he has to show me.
|
Just when I was coming to terms with keeping my interior stock. Dang you guys!
Dingo, looks like you mounted the seats as a test, how did they feel? Wait, I don't want to know... I like you're idea to paint the backs red, and looking forward to seeing Tartan samples. Matt, spot on with your red Houndstooth, smart that the rear cushions are removable also. Seeing your interior makes me miss my old RS door cards, radio delete plate and black metal Rothsport shifter. The temptation is coming back... |

I just sat them in there to make sure they will fit before spending too much money on them, but I did sit in them on the garage floor and they feel awesome! Yeah I think painting the shells red would brighten things up in there a bit. Stay tuned I'll see what my interior guy comes up with! |

went and seen my trimmer mate this morning, thinking houndstooth cushions. Just have to choose between white and red... I like the yellow but probably will look stupid in a red car! |

No progress on the car, but mrs dingo and I bought our first house together a few months ago so all my time and money is going into that at the moment!
My first project is getting the garage set up.. Does anybody have any experience with marine type garage carpet? I'm really unsure what to do with the floor! Actually I have no idea what to do with the garage in general but I figure I'll start with the floor and work my way up haha |
No carpet lovers here! Parts have finally arrived for sunroof and cv boots! Hopefully I'll get some time this weekend to get stuck into it, dont think I've driven the car in 4 or 5 months!
