Before I go crazy!

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. The way I read it is that car went in for a top end rebuild and whilst there someone has switched the CCU for a knackered one hoping that the owner won't notice. If that is the case, can't say I'm shocked, but I'd be absolutely livid. Maybe the OP could clarify ?

What has happened is just not on! When your car was at the workshop for rebuild it was in their care, so this should NOT have happened in any way! I have a 90 964 C4 with 120k on the clock and the CCU doesn’t look anything like that! I would go back to the rebuilders and tell them in no uncertain terms that they need to restore it to the condition you left the car in. If no go threaten legal or small claims court action to put right.

Will be very intetesting to follow this thread! The problem with parts stolen/shifted by workshops will increase with the age of the cars!

I’m pretty sure mine was also replaced at some point as s the buttons are worn and the housing is a shade lighter than the rest of the dash. I will also be hunting for a new assembly or hopefully someone will make new buttons/stickers.
I could also see these wear prematurely if the person owning the car uses sunblock regularly and doesn’t wash hands after applying. The chemicals in sunblock will quickly deteriorate the paint used on these buttons.
