Default 964 Engine ID

Is there a way to ID these engines besides using the serial number. Would the casting number on the crankcase give any clues? I looked at one that seems like the later type with the plastic intake and R134 compressor. I noticed that the casting number had a R in it . Would that be the 1994 R type?

The serial number is in the form starting with 61 or 62. 61=Turbo 62= Normally aspirated. The letter following the numbers codes for year 89=K,90=L,91=M,92=N,93=P,94=R. The rest of number is serial number.

Stamped ahead of the serial number on the horizontal section of case, next to chain housing is the engine type. M64/01= N/A stick shift, M64/02=N/A tiptronic, M64/03=Carrera RS, M30/69=3.3 Turbo, M64/50=3.6 Turbo.

I was wondering if there is a way to tell the engine year without looking at the serial number. I noticed the number 964.101.111.1R on the crankcase near the drain plug.

That says the part number for right half of the crankcase. On the other side it will end with a L.

PS: You will see a similar number on a GT-3 by the way.

Hi Adrian-

Porsche have gotten tired of people noticing the GT3 had a 964 crankcase so they changed it!! Here is thread I started on this issue:

Yes I know. Made in Spain now. I honestly think they ran out of 964 crankcase halves and had to start a new production run. The GT-3 has actually gone far beyond what was originally planned in production numbers.
You would think Porsche would have learned by now, but no! Build a great RS and people are going to keep buying it and buying it but somehow they do not plan for this just like in 1973.

PS: The 964 Carrera RS ran to a production of 2000 but was not continued because of the economics of the time.

We are just ordering a new crankcase to repair a damaged 964 engine, I'll see where the parts were manufactured. Appparently current stock in Germany, as of today, is 10 sets of bare cases with studs.
