New to me '93 C4: 3.8L
Having only owned water-cooled, PDK, turbo 911s, I decided to try something with a bit more emotion (aka air-cooled, manual, NA). After looking for several months at 964s and 993s, I am now the proud owner of a ’93 964 C4.
I found a car that was very well sorted – long list of items that were attended to by the previous owner. Things such as DME solid state relay, LED headlights, new brakes, new Carrera Cup front strut brace, repaired gauges, new AC compressor, new shift boot, Porsche classic radio w bluetooth handsfree, and several other items. The point is it was well sorted and everything was running perfectly and as it should. The interior is in amazing condition. However, during the PPI the leak down/compression tests showed one cylinder was not performing well and a rebuild was eventually going to be needed.
I decided to purchase the car and do the rebuild. As we all know, it’s easy to take on a lot “while you’re in there”. For me that included an upgrade to 3.8 with Mahle pistons and cylinders, new cams, and Steve Wong chip. I also upgraded the suspension with Bilstein B6 and H&R springs. Installed a G pipe/secondary delete. Replaced wheels with Fuchs. The previous owner also cited that when cold, it was a little difficult to get into second gear. I didn’t notice it during the test drive, but then again the engine wasn’t cold. So we also rebuilt the transmission (replaced worn syncros and carrier bearings, new clutch disc).
Basically I feel like it's a new car at this point. It drives amazing.

Just the H&R Sport springs (not super sport or race). Had them turned all the way down. My fear was it would be too firm, but it's not at all. Handles great and feels great.

Welcome to the 964 world. Nice intro.
Sounds like a great car, that you just made a whole lot better.
Love hearing that from a Porsche driver with so much water-cooled experience.
Looking forward to more pics! Have the same springs, so you're making me want to lower my car even more...

While I test drove several 964s, I don’t have daily experience with the 3.6 964 to opine whether there is a noticeable difference with the 3.8. I certainly hope there is after making the investment My thought was given that I was coming from more modern 911s with a lot more torque/acceleration, I didn’t want to be let down in any way and given that we had the engine out anyway.....Although it’s not really fair to compare this with my other 911s (997.2 Turbo, 991.2 4S), and I try not to do so, but let’s just say it’s a amazing experience driving this car. And I will say that the previous owner who drove this when all the work was done did comment that the increased power was noticeable.
