Default Sunroof seal

Today I ordered both pieces needed to replace the sunroof seal on my C4 and a pot of "Wurths" adhesive.

Has anyone any tips, advice or lessons learned from completing this DIY?

Thanks,

There's a 'how to' article on Pelican, I think.

Don't put the part that goes on the body backwards!

...don't ask how I know.

READ your adhesive instructions CAREFULLY, and test it on the old seal and a shovel or something before putting it against your paint and smearing it, etc. for a mess.

My install, although tidy, was a bit amiss in the forward facing category!

JB - I read the Pelican article: it refers to 3 pieces of seal, however their catalog lists only 2 - one for front & one for rear!

I am thinking these are both for the body vs. roof?

Jeff - how did you get at the rear seal? Did it require removing the roof completely?

Thanks all,

Hi Kahdmus

Recently replaced my seals as well. I only had 2 pieces. The longer of the 2 attach to the body (side and front) and the shorter piece to the back of the sunroof. I found it easiest to remove the roof completely as it gave you more space to work in. Need a second pair of hands to install the roof again though.

As jeff said, make sure you install the new seals the correct way round otherwise another set will be needed - speaking from experience.

Yes, I concur, there is no other way than to remove the sunroof panel completely...not a tough job, just keep the pieces in order and it's a WONDERFUL opportunity to learn what the zipper in your headliner is used for!

As for 3 pieces, there actually is...but you might pray hell finding that 3rd piece made available - but then, maybe I just forgot to order it??

Anywho - it is just a rubber strip that lays horizontal just underneath the rear part of the sunroof seal and may help with noise -or- snugging the rear of the roof panel up against the body a bit more.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Just replace the two-piece seal and you should be good to go.

I have some pics that I took while taking the sunroof panel apart - funny how these things haven't changed since the early 70s 911s.

Great information - thanks very much! Pics would be a bonus if you have 'em!

Its way time I completed this bit of DIY - I'm going to end up having a coronary one of these times after a wash when I put the break on and get a litre of water down theback of my neck!!!

Howard, I'll try and post a pic or two when I get home.

In the meantime, a few tips to get you started:

1) open your sunroof about4-6", reach up with both your hands at the leading edge of your sunroof headliner and snap the headliner piece out of it's snaps and pull forward and all the way out.

***CORRECTION: do NOT pull headliner piece forward, instead, slide back and out of the way - then you will have access to the mounting plates/cable ends.***

2) you will then see four plates that are the main connection points for your sunroof panel...2 that connect the cables to the roofpiece, and two that allow for height adjustment/alignment.

3) open your roof the rest of the way and start unscrewing the aluminum pieces that enclose the rails and the wind deflector.

...if you're smart about this, you'll pre-order ALL the plastic pieces associated with your wind deflector...ask Jon (or was it another UK guy?) about how important this is.

4) remove the remaining rail covers and associated hardware.

At the same time, it's not a bad idea to order the nylon/plastic (two of them are white, one black...or the other way around) that guide the leading edge of the sunroof panel in as it's almost closed.

All these pieces just snap in, it's that easy!

You are likely to break some of the plastic pieces associated with the wind deflector - it just happens. ...they are old, sun-beaten and brittle by this point.

Keep track of all the rail pieces and what side they go on, their associated screws and whatnot.

5) remove the guides and cable attachment points...DO NOT TURN THE KNURLED ***** ATTACHED TO YOUR SUNROOF PANEL!! These are height adjustments, right and left and if your roof was aligned well - leave it!

I'll provide some pics and make sure I'm on the right track here.

Be sure to tune in for Part II of the Sunroof Chronicals.

Really great step-by-step jeff! IMO much better than whats on pelican! Incidentally I took a cursory look over the roof last night and broke BOTH of the small front pieces that connect the wind deflector:

Anyone have a part #?

Also, most disturbingly I pulled part of the seal away and underneath is a layer of soft orange pre-rust like stuff - it wipes off with a finger, but I'm not sure what to treat it with?:

Well, better to know about it and be able to address it!

Cheers,

"Incidentally I took a cursory look over the roof last night and broke BOTH of the small front pieces that connect the wind deflector:"

I told ya so, I told ya so!

Howard, again, if you wait till I get home tonight...I'll provide the part#s

I believe I still have them written down on index cards that I used when I had my ENTIRE 964 apart, down to the shell last Winter. I ordered every stinkin' little plastic hoobidingy there was!

...and to think I have to do it all over again this Winter because the paint shop has offered to redo the paint!

Maybe I'll go for the Speed Yellow respray??

Wondered if anyone can supply the part number for the front pieces that connect the wind deflector discussed above? They are noted as #25 on the following pic:

Cheers!
