Question distributor belt question?

my car just reach 40,000miles, I want to change my distributor belt, call my OPC and they said i can't just replace the belt. I have to replace the distributor as well because porsche doesn't sell the belt seperately as they figure if you have to change the belt then the distributor is gone as well. they are asking about $1000 plus labor.

what do u guys think? i can get the belt and replace just that? or they are right?
thanks

As far as I have seen, the belt is available from a lot of different sources.
This place sells it, and on this page has a description (not too clear) on how to replace it:

http://www.type-911.co.uk/gp_engine.htm

So it sounds like you can replace the belt only. I know of many 964's with over 120,000 miles with the original distributors, and probably the belt! So, with only 40,000 miles, I doubt your distributors themselves would be worn out.

Just my two cents! Hope it's helpful.

That is the official Porsche line. They will sell you the new distributor with a new belt. The rest of the stuff is just a line.
The life of a distributor belt is determined by the venting kit. If you have the vent kit installed then the belt can easily go to 60,000 miles. I recommend the change be done at 5 years of life or 60K.
The belt can be changed by a competent DIY person and a procedure is in my book.
There are other facilities who will change thebelt for you if you send them the distributor. Being in Thailand I understand that this might cause down time etc.
The key issue is the vent kit. Is it installed?
Is your belt more than 5 years old (especially in the tropics)?
Are you a DIY person?

Adrian,
I not sure about the vent kit, but i don't think it's there, I have them check out my car record for the last 4 years and it havn't been change. (my car have a very limited record as it was impound by the goverment for illegal import, so the record only go back about 4 years....)
No i am not a DIY person, i will problably do more harm to the car if DIY.
How ever i call them again today and they said if i can give them the belt they can put in on for me, the labor cost here is pretty low.. so it might be the way to go.
you know where i can get the vent kit?
did u complet your RUF crt conversion? I am try to do a cr2 convertion on my, i am only missing Ruf cpu. still looking around. There was a Ruf dealer hear, Lot's of 964 around here have the upgrade done.
I will try to order your book.
Thanks for your time

to see if you have a venting kit on your 964, look at the left side of the engine. there is a black tubing which should have two small whitish tube that comes out of it. Look for the one that runs from the black tubing to the distributor. That's the venting kit. Now if I can only find a picture...

I have a question, I have a 90 c4 with 33k miles on it. The previous owner has all the records computer records from the dealership and has done the 15, 30 and 45 mile service. He did it every 4 years regardless of the miles. Would one of those services have changed the belt? Or is there a place I can find out what is done at these services? Thanks, Rory

It looks to me that your best place is to get the records from the previous owner.

I think you can get whether the actual recall campaigns were completed from PCNA, but thats all.

I my case, I got the name of the original selling dealer from PCNA, however, when I called the selling dealer they said they could not give out service information.

nine64,

The venting kit is just for venting due to the ozone gas accumulated inside the distributor. You do not need a new one but simply check if the vent is clear!
I have my new dis belt put in by my mechanic six months ago, he was willing to do such job and he is a trained Porsche mechanic. I was told that he was not allowed to change it until he was sent to Porsche in Germany for a special course.
I watched him to do it and it took him almost an hour to replace the belt!( some beer in between!)
I would not do it myself after watching him doing it!

Cheers!

Eddie

Eddie,

my specalist can't do it either, so i would have to go to OPC, they are willing to do it for me. I will be in Hong Kong this weekend to pick up some part. Any suggestion where to get it? I order some stuff from Design911 HK. but don't know any other store.
thanks
tenn

Dear tenn,

If it is just the belt you want, then you can get it from the OPC. Now if you want the distributor with the new belt just put in I can try my mechanic and see if he can help.

Please write to my e-mail address and I can contact you direct. In fact I need to take a friend of mine who runs a 968S4 to see my mechanic this saturday afternoon.
