Default Power steering quit working.

I was at the track yesterday and the power steering quit working (hey, real men don't need power steering anyway!). Belt is there, fluid is full, no noises, no foaming in the reservoir, etc. I had rebuilt the pump a couple years ago. At that time it had started making noises, foaming, and the rebuild solved it. This time, I'm wondering if it could be the rack? I should probably take off the pump again and see if it appears to pump fluid. Any other suggestions?

Yes. We drove the car for several hours on the track after the power steering failed. If the crank bolt was loose, I suspect we would have noticed

Again, everything appears and sounds normal, just no power assist.

Thanks.

Happened to me as well, Just give your PS pump a tug, the entire shaft will probably slide out... The Clip on the back of the shaft breaks and dis-engages the splines to drive the vanes.

OK. I'll check it out tonight. I assume this probably means a new pump is order, and that the old pump is no longer a usable "core".

Thanks.

The ends of the splines are boogered up on mine, I have a spare but I think with a bit of filing I could bring it back to life and have it as a spare for the track

I didn't get a chance to take the belt off, but I can see that the shaft is extended out about a half inch out from the pump body, not in line with the crank pulley. So I guess this is good news that it's the pump and not the rack.

Anyone have any experience with these AAE pumps? Rock Auto sells them new for $138 (no core required). http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....263563&jsn=365

I think that Clip needs periodic replacing, obviously it holds the shaft from coming out. so it does have somewhat of a load on it... Mine Quit at Watkins Glen on the Back Straight, and the track was a bit wet.. it was exciting going through the bus stop :-)
