Default Brake question!

I'm a bit confused about a thing!

What is a monoblock caliper, and what differs them from the ordinary big red caliper?
They are used on the 996 GT3 for example

Which company sells the cheapest big red/black upgrade. or just the components required?
Yes i've been searching for hours

Default monobloc

Hi peter,

A monobloc caliper is different from the regular calipers in that it is one solid piece rather than two halfs joined together. It makes for a stiffer caliper. I haven't driven a car with monoblocs but I'm not too sure you would be able to tell too much of a difference in pedal feel. Although the monoblocs are bigger so you can use bigger rotors getting less fade.

Don't know where to find the cheapest one though...sorry

umm kind of funny to hear two 951 drivers talk about what it's like to have monoblock calipers. The 951 has four of them. One on each rotor. 944 NA's and 98% of the rest of the cars in the world have what is known as floating piston calipers that is where the caliper rest in a fixed fram and when the piston pushes against one brake pad the entire caliper slides or "floats" in the fixed frame thus pulling on the other brake pad. The 951 on the otherhand has "Monoblock" calipers where the entire caliper is a rigid structure that houses pistons on both sides of the rotor and the pistons press on each brake pad from said pads back. I know that it is hard to visualize but the Monoblock design provides: a stiffer pedal, more even pad wear, and more consistant braking.

An easy way to examine the difference is to look at your brake calipers and look at any other lesser cars calipers.

Hope this helped,
John

Default yes, but...

Hi john,

This is true that porsche calipers have the pistons on both sides but this does not make them monobloc. This type of caliper is only a recent development. If you look at 951 calipers you can see that the are two halfs bolted together. Both sides have pistons, but it is not a solid piece.

Default just a picture...

Heres a picture of big reds. You can clearly see the separation line and the four bolts holding the halfs together.

Peter,
You might try: http://home.earthlink.net/~enhanceme...es/brakes.html
For pretty good prices.

I've dealt with Chris on a number of items, and his service, communication, and prices are excellent.

Thanks for the answers!

Pretty much what i'd allready figured out then

Here is a kit from Sandén in sweden http://www.sanden.nu/images/art/bromsar.JPG and then you have to buy the adapters and pads seperately, for the price of 1964$ and another 209$ for the adapters and 209$ for the pads aswell...
That makes this a very expensive kit with other words!

How big are the GT3 calipers cylinders? are they bigger than for the Big reds?

Peter,
I missed your location on the first read. Sorry about that. I think that Chris may still be worth talking to.

I'm not certain about the size difference, but the GT3's are monobloc calipers, meaning they are one piece, as opposed to two halves in the big reds. This makes the GT3's lighter and stiffer.

So we're all mistaking our calipers for "monoblocks", which should instead be called "fixed" instead, hmm.
