Well apparently everyone on this list wants what we can't have!
Including Lart who has had everything, ha ha happy new year boys hope you all have a great 2017 here's to Porsche wishes and corvette dreams. Patrick what ever happened with that thread from a few years ago regarding a group buy of 01E taller ring and pinions 3.44?

This thread? https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...68-tranny.html

Not sure that anything happened after all that. It was the opposite of what I wanted in the end Shawn. I also investigated different versions of the 01E boxes and also trying to get some Dog gears made for the 968 trans. All a bit too difficult at the moment. I'd possibly settle for a shorter 6th cog if one existed. I may need a spare 6 speed box and your one looks nice but just not quite in that price bracket.

Yeah I can see how cost would be a big hurtle in getting custom cut dog teeth in your ratios. It would be neat to have a sequential dual cable shifted dog cut box for race only as it would be a funner on track experience!

A local guy I know built a 911 engined early VW bus/truck conversion with custom shorter 944 Torque tube and 944 transaxle that he controls with a simply made quicker more accurate and no wear in a rod type shift mechanism that uses 996 controls and cables he just had to make this little device to make it work!

That's very cool right there! So it's a 5 speed that he's converted to the dual cable mechanism. Quite a handy guy! Are they stock gears?

I believe he's using a S or S2 transaxle to handle the 911 motors tq

I'm new to this forum but happy to see activity from this year. After owning several 944s, 951s, and 968s over the years, I am now (not me but rather an expert mechanic) in the process of putting an LS1 in my current 968 coupe. This will not be a daily driver nor a track car nor a cross-country trip car, but even as an "around the county" car I can already tell that I am going to be frustrated with the LS1/968 transaxle ratios.

It sounds as though my best option for an <$5k solution with better ratios would be a 951S AOR 5-speed transaxle. Any better suggestions for me in that would fall into that general price range (parts only)? I'm aware the half-shaft axles will need replaced, but I think I am understanding that the AOR transaxle mounts are the same as the 968?

Much obliged for any advice!

Demoman that’s correct a 951/944 transaxle fits on a 968 torque tube just fine however if your putting a ls1 in the car then they might be installing a 951/944 torque tube anyway either way the 951/944 and 968 gearboxes swap back and forth on either torque tube. You just need the right shift rod and linkage for each one as there different and of course the single shorter axle for 968 gearbox.

the taller 3.4 r&p is def nice for 300 +hp/tq engines that rev fast and won’t see the track much if track is we’re your headed then you want the 3.75 obviously of the 968 or S2 944

good luck

Much obliged boost feen. Yeah, the ls1 adaptor kit they're using doesn't fit the 968 torque tube so they're putting in a 951 torque tube instead. I just ordered an AOR from eBay. I may drive the AOR as is initially, and then look into a different r&p down the road. IIRC my 951S used to turn about 3k rpm at 75mph in 5th, which is gonna sound weird with the ls1, but 2nd thru 4th might be a lot of fun. BTW, the 968 3.0 motor + tube + transaxle will be up for sale soon, if you know anyone. Thanks again.

Oh ok well the AOR is a good gearbox you should be happy with it. If your making a lot over 400 hp you should be careful in lower 2 gears and under takeoff not to launch to hard as it will start breaking things past the 400 pony mark! But if your easy on her she will take some abuse. Also I can’t pm you but interested in talking further about your project email me commdiver@sbcglobal.net

Where are you located? Thanks Shawn

I carry longer 5th gears in stock which help with lowering the cruising RPM. Let me know if you would like one and I can also assist with installing it.

I'd be interested in a set. What's the price?
