Default AOS Heat Shield and 3" Downpipe

Did a search and found a thread from late 2007 ( https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...pe-people.html ) that somewhat details my situation.

I'm using a turbo with a V-Band and installing a Fabspeed exhaust. Only problem is there appears to be some interference with the AOS Heat Shield and the Pipe is very close to the lower rear most balance shaft cover bolt. Before I whip out the dremel tool and start carving on the AOS heat shield, just curious what others may have found and if their experience is similar - or not.

Jay, I had to build my own downpipe from scratch. I remember is was quite a project very frustrating to get it just right. LOTS of time. The first bend out of the turbo was really tough finding the one 90 that would work "after" extensive massaging. I finally got it tacked together and had the pros at Burns Stainless finish weld it. I also had to mod the intake support slightly. It going to be tough to make that downpipe work I would guess.

Thanks for the insight Greg. I think you're probably right in that its going to take a little work to make this work (not un-doable though).

Thinking a little modification to the AOS heat shield is in order to make it work. May have to implement contingency protections for the AOS.

btw - your old wheels turned out great I think.

Here's a thread where I convinced myself it would be ok:

And here's a thread where I learned better (see post 20):

I love engine ****.

I built my own heat shield out of the stuff you see in modern cars, the stiff insulated aluminum stuff. There was a shet of it at the shop I was using

If that is the turbo you are using, i sugest you do a 3,5" DP regarding backpressure.

I'm just finishing installation of an SFR downpipe. it was a very unenjoyable process, with some swearing. My car is a budget race car, and nothing is trying to be as clean as your cars. I ended up beating the ever living crap out of the area where Tom's was touching. also, make sure that any v band clamping is happening down stream of the bottom of that shield. I had the most trouble in that region. I'm pretty close to the balance shaft bolt as well. I really hate exhaust work, and getting this piece aligned for the first time made the factory crossover pipe installation seem easy, relaxing, and downright enjoyable.

Is the fab speed piece larger diameter than the LR piece? I didn't have any issues with the v-band install with my car....guessing it must be a fatter pipe??
No wear marks anywhere when I checked...I just pulled the motor a couple months ago.

It looked like the shield should be able to bend out of the way, but its pretty strong down there and the proximity to the AOS is a problem

I'm embarrassed to post my pictures, I try to take care of my stuff, but I spend too much time racing this car to have everything immaculate

Ah. I'm v-band on the hot side with T4, guess that helps out quite a bit.

Thanks for posting those pics. Neighbors car I'm working on has a bolted kkk hotside like you posted. I will have to keep close watch when putting things together. Won't be any time soon though

Jay it can be done with some patience and proper tube location... You need to match the OD of the turbo's V'band then in a few inches you can transition to 3" if needed. I'd be happy to help with some more ideas locally - by the way your wastegate is plumbed backwards.
