Default Soda blasting engine bay.

Continuing on with this 924 project.

Since this car has had the worlds worst paint job. The engine bay paint is just sprayed on with no prep. so you can just scratch the paint off.

I'm thinking of soda blasting the engine bay.

Question is, will it penetrate though the galvanised coating?

I know paint stripper won't penetrate it, but that's a a lot more work.

It shouldn't if done properly.

I had some items soda-blasted to remove paint and grime from the brake shields and they came out nice and clean with the Galvanized coating intact.

YMMV

I've never had to do soda blasting before, but i know it's not as harsh as sand blasting.

I'm just worried how long it will sit unpainted.

If you worry at all about the galvanizing, you can get "galvanize in a spray can" and touch up after the fact.

Paulyy.

You should plastic bead the car where you want to remove paint.

The plastic bead will not remove the galvanize coating.

The weapon systems I work on are plastic bead blasted so that the conversion coating "chromate VI alodine" does not get removed.

We are blasting off a Mil-spec Polyurethane paint that withstands 7 plus years out at sea. Much stronger than the paint you would be removing.

That would definitely be the route I would go with my cars. Soda blasting would be a second option at lower pressures if you could not get plastic bead done.
