Default Project: Race Car

I have bit the bullet and plan on starting a new project. Something i can enjoy with out getting into trouble on the streets. I was going to do this thread later, but it saves me posting to many threads with new questions.

Short back story:

In the past few months, a very close friend bought a Honda CRX to race on a track for fun. we've worked on that a fair bit stripping it, painting it.. the lot. This has tempted me to get into the game also. This got me thinking, Maybe i should pick up a cheap 944 n/a strip it and race it. But for 10k, i didn't think it would be enough. 10k is a "cheap" one down here.
Then i thought, Hang on a minute. I have a 924 parts car that we bought fully working 10 years ago to pull the fuel system for dads 924.

I thought about it. It weights just over 1000kgs. has a manual rack and has no sunroof. A perfect base to start at.
Only cons are that it's a 4 stud with drum brakes at the rear. and it's an auto.

Thankfully 10 years ago, i attempted to "fix" it when i was 15. It had the worst respray in history so we paint stripped the doors and roof. stripped some of the interior and removed the engine.

So on sunday we picked up the car off the mezzanine floor (where we stored it for all this time) and put it on the hoist.

Initial Plans:

Is to strip the car entirely.
Wide body and hit it with a coat of paint.

Convert it to a 5 stud. with either 944 parts or custom.
Convert it to manual.
Build a motor for it. most likely will build the 2L. iron block, simple motor hopefully she likes big boost.
address the suspension.
And a few other bits and pieces.

Most things on here i plan to either make, modify and use what ever i have laying around.

First thing will be completely stripping the interior.
Remove the auto and torque tube.
remove pretty much everything from the engine bay as i wont need most of it.
Then from there i'll work out what's next.

So here's some photos:

This might be a good candidate for the VW 1.8T swap?

Will it be strictly a "go fast" track car or are you looking at racing also? If you are going to race I would check into the restrictions that are required by the various racing bodies. Some require the engine and chassis manufacturer to match, some don't.

I rather not spend the money on something I already

It will most likely be a go fast car. We've got plenty of track days here were you can just enter to have fun and or compete with others with lap times.

I would look at the Ford 2 liter that they are using in Europe.

I like where this is going ;-)

Good luck with the build Pauly, looks like there's a fair bit of work ahead! Should be a lot of fun and I'm keen to see how it ends up.

What are your plans for the engine build? I'm assuming it's an n/a...are you going to go for aftermarket turbo with custom plumbing, fuel and ecu etc...or try to source as many 931 parts as possible and build a factory-ish setup? Might be easier to just source a whole 931 engine? ...or dare I say it, an LS1? :P

There is a lot of work! Luckily no schedule. or WTAC next year... nah J/K

Well ultimately, at the back of my head i really want to find out how much i can push a 924 block. It's iron & Closed deck. Which means i'm pretty open to anything. Similar size to honda k20 dare i say.. so i could even look around for parts. (we all know those honda bearings are bulletproof) more research to be done before i do anything like that.

I will probably go custom pluming, standalone (note the other thread) garrett turbo. and what ever else it needs probably make.

Only negative is the head. I've read that its a huge bottle neck. we'll see what we can do there.

I want to try make everything i possibly can. which is my theme around this project. (i didn't get the chance with my car as we had our shop rented out for a few years while i did all my mods)

LS? Ha, i doubt it, probably keep it "traditional"

I almost forgot you have almost a whole parts bin full of stuff. We'll keep in touch! I always rather local. I'll be needing a few things.

Had a few hours to work on the car today.

Just pulled out the wiring harness + all the rest of the wiring. Although i left the tail light+fuel pump wires as there's no point in re wiring those.
Everything else that will be used like headlights will be rewired with new a new fuse box ect.
Also plan to keep the original cluster with the 3 gauges and wire in all the warning lights.

All that's left in the interior is the sound deadening that will be removed soon.

Got a little more done today. removed more from the engine bay.
Got the engine on the stand, pulled it apart and cleaned up a few bits and pieces.

That combustion chamber almost looks like a diesel.

Word has it that this motor was based off a diesel motor and apparently that's why they're bullet proof.
Look at the head bolt configuration, Note how close the head bolts are to the pistons.
