Default Outside mirror housing broke. Thoughts on repairing?

Rotated my passenger side mirror back yesterday to remove my car cover and the housing fell off in my hands. Grrrrr......

Appears to be a threaded tube or spring that broke.

Is this repairable without buying a new housing? I searched the archives but couldn't find anything.

Thanks,
Jerome

It may have just come unscrewed (most likely). It is a pia to put back together as there is a relatively heavy spring in the housing you have to compress while turning the fitting in. Ivan made a tool which made it easier but still no fun. Your best bet (what I typically always did) is to take it off the car and disassemble the mirror to get the wiring out of the way. It makes it much easier to reassemble but you have to do a bit of work to get there.

No matter what it's no fun.

Hope you and the family are well. We should meet up for a beer sometime. Drag Marks out of the house as well.

Chris is basically on the money here..... I spent a LOT of time trying to fix it without removing the wiring, and it never worked. best bet is to completely take it apart. Once you take the base off the car it will probably be a little more obvious.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll play with it a bit this weekend and if minimal progress, just get a replacement.

I completed this repair over the weekend. It was relatively easy and straight forward, no replacement parts needed, and it takes some pressure to get that fitting reinstalled with the spring. You need a tool to remove the pins from the connector inside the mirror housing. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing most of the process. You definitely want to remove the mirror from the base and from the door.
