Default Which Clutch?

Which clutch do you guys recommend for street driving, with maybe a bit of autocross/DE thrown in the mix?

My car is putting down 250hp/290t to the wheels and when I replace the clutch this winter I'm going with Lindsey's Spec stage 1 or 2. If your cars stock or just chipped the Sach's or Cup clutch would be fine.

I'm using the cup clutch (only 4 big springs) with my Vitesse stage 1 kit, with great results. It all depend on how you drive a car. We carry the centerforce clutch and the Sasch cup clutch. We like both, but we personnaly use the cup clutch cause the cost is lower and they do the job right (don't slip)

On Vitesse Stage 3, 400+rwhp, I use The Cup Clutch without a problem.

If the cup clutch cannot handle the power you have, and if you upgrade to a stronger clutch. More than likely you will start snapping parts...

Driving habits play a big role in clutch life and reliability. Drag racing, dumping the clutch,... are no-no .. Matching RPMs when shifting gears are a must especially with big-HP engines.

I reciently installed a cup clutch in my stock Turbo S. Feels fine and nice on the street. No driveability concerns.

John - what about a 3 or 4 puck alternative? Is there one available (I thought I saw one on Lindsey's site). I could care less if it is a little tricky to drive.

Marcus Blaszak has a Sachs based clutch with 30% more clamping force and it can use the stock disc or a kevlar disc. Price is attractive and it seems to work well.

Do not go with the CenterForce clutch.
This is my opinion from experience:
Last May I purchased a CenterForce clutch for my vehicle.
Paid a mechanic $1200 to put it (was working to much).
When I drove the vehicle it vibrated badly at 3000 rpm.
It also skipped/chattered when down shifting. OK, so let's break it in very gently.
Never happened, still did this for over 2 months of driving.
Finally went back to CenterForce within their 90 day warranty period.
Sent them the clutch and the flywheel, they resurface the flywheel and balanced the whole setup together and sent back to me for no charge.
This time went to a different mechanic (ScottShop in Sarasota) to install for $500. Clutch did the same thing! Drove it for another 2 months and no better.

Took the clutch out, sold it on Ebay and bought a Cup clutch with aluminum pressure plate (400 Hp type), and lightened flywheel.

What a difference, no appreciable pedal stiffness and a bit quicker response, no chattering or vibrations. Centrifugal weights on the pressure plate is definitely the old way.

mslovak1: Did the other mechanic tell you why he could do it for such a good price??

Also, I found a guy that sells Sachs clutch kits and said he will match any competiotrs prices. Just FYI.

I have a 993 turbo clutch in my 951... it is a step up from the cup clutch that was in the car, and is still nice on the street.
