OK...you need to go home...install that thing and take a pic of flames shooting out of the side of it so that we can all make it our desktop background.

What are the advantages?

I think that a straight system with the end of the pipe straight back owuld be the best. Just like on the original cup cars. Bends are bad in exhausts..

Todd or anyone else...does anyone know if a cutout would actually fit? The section from the downpipe to the cat looks to be the best place, but isn't that double walled anyways?

Anyone ever attempted a cutout install. I researched it for awhile, but all the exhaust people I spoke with said it would be a very tight / impossible fit. I love the idea though, where you can have a subtle daily driver, but then open up the cutout to help spool / add hp / actually hear the turbo / actually hear the exhaust :-)

I'm going to resurrect this thread with some questions of my own. Thinking about this from a street point of view. Would say a borla XR-1 or similar muffler fit under the car where the factory cat is supposed to be? If so, you could take the pipe from there and create the side exit exhaust and still have a muffler in the system to make the car a little more streetable. I'm currently in the market for exhaust and like the idea of a side exit sytem. My car is not a daily driver, just a weekend cruiser, but I'm thinking a purely strait piped car might even been too loud for that.

I would like to hear everyones thoughts on this. Also, did SFR ever make this side exit kit they were talking about?

Thanks,
CoDy

I had a side exit exit exhaust made for my widebody 951 race car. Danny, my local fabricator made it with a V-band and also put one on the original muffler so I could swap it out quickly if I run afoul of the noise gods at the track. Any one near Beaufort, SC can come and have one installed for a very reasonable price. Since it involves cutting and welding the original pipe, mail-order is not practical.

That sounds pretty nice. Have any vids or pics of it? My main concern with trying to run that type of exhaust on the street would be ground clearance between the exit pipe and the road, I just see it getting smashed or ripped off very easily.

Any pics of how this would look and what sort of potential clearance issues would arise?

If you are building this for a street car just come out right behind the front wheel. It's not too loud for the street, too loud for a DD maybe.

I ran my 3 inch exhaust for a week with no muffler, since I couldn't get it welded up. It just dumped half way underneath the car. That was effing LOUD. It's still loud now that I have everything finished with a resonator. I'm gonna need a pre-muffler, easy. Anyone running straight pipe is crazy.

Crazy may be a good word for it indeed. I run my cummins strait piped and it's loud, real loud, but I love it. Now, a 4 cylnder gas engine would sound quite a bit different. anyone have a sound clip of a side exit on a 951?

I have one video of mine running, but unfortunately it was taken with a sub-standard camera and makes it sound like a giant diesel motor.

I don't have one on hand. My car is very low. I can't fit my foot under the front of the car with the CPR splitter installed. The pipe has as much clearance as the nose.

Wow, that's crazy low. I don't think I could get my car into the garage if it was that low.
