Thinking about 3.0 turbo conversion

as an after thought, let me take this further. I will work up the numbers spent on a customer S2 that we turboed, and I will compare those to the 2.7 we are finishing up. In short these two cars are equiped with:
S2-
3.0 liter stock block, new rings and bearing installed when rods were changed.
Custom short Pauter rods, 9:1 compression using stock pistons.
Stock pistons.
951 intercooler.
Stage two turbo.
MAF kit, ARCII
Stock knock sensor and timing.
951/S2 intake manifold.
951 exhaust manifolds, crossover.
2.5" test pipe.
Stock coil.
951 throttle body.
Stock chips.
Stock computer.
Stock cams.
Stock head, new lifters and chain tensioner assembly.
88 944-
2.7 liter stock block, new rings and bearings installed when rods were changed.
Matched/balanced 951 forged rods,
Stock pistons.9:1 compression by shaving.
951 intercooler.
Worked K26 with 8 hotside.
MAF kit, ARCII
Stock knock sensor and timing.
951intake manifold.
951 exhaust manifolds, crossover.
Stock cat section.
Stock coil.
951 throttle body.
Stock chips.
Stock computer.
Stock cam.
Stock head, 2.7.
I know these aren't apples to apples, but based on the dyno results and remaining potential after studying the results, we can see where the cash could be saved by starting either way.

I've got that 2.85 liter engine still here for sale... and it's got ALL of the good stuff internally. Big bucks was spent on this engine.
I'm selling the entire short block for $3500 or with the big turbo and big valve head/cam/porting for $5000 complete.
The entire engine has been setup for the race track with a custom oil pan/pickup, to the rods/pistons/sleeves, to the head, etc...
It's a damn good deal. It's not 3 liters, but it's real close.

Tony - it is a terrific deal and if you will look I have lobbied to sell it for you. I doubt it will be around in a few months or it WOULD be the way to go. The price is terrific.

Just so you all know... Miledge makes an intake manifold for the 16V head (and the 8V) - I saw the thing at the German Autofest... the thing kicks MAJOR butt... and it costs just over $5K

Why bother with shaving pistons, shorter rods, when you can buy these nowadays from Mahle. They are finally selling 8:1 compression pistons to worl with the 104mm bore of the 944S2/968 blocks. Its a direct bolton and all you would need is a 2.7 NA head and the rest is all 944 turbo parts. The major cost is in the pistons/rods but that is still only $2500 which is not bad for a 8:1 compression engine. The price for the rest of teh parts is all dependent on how much you get them for. If you have the space and time, get a wrecked but running 944 turbo and swap most of the parts, get a nice turbo and maf and you are all set to be close to 400hp/tq.

Raj - are you saying that all that is needed (if you have the car, and I do) is a set of the Mahle pistons, 3.0L block and 2.7NA head?
For the record I am not trying to turbo an S2 or 968 but rather increase the displacement of my 944T.

anyway to check it?
I have 12 Piece in teh agrage but they are still installed in the block so this is not easy.

BTW we made a 3 L engine out of a 951 Cabrio for about $6000
A lot of work has done by our selfs. the biggest problem is to make the Block 3 L the rods. the pistons etc. all teh parts cost money. the Car had already a Vitesse MAF and a Big Turbo

But it ALSO says - opt. sinter-forged
Not sure if this means optional? And what kind of option would this be?

K .. I had an S2 engine that I turbo charged. I ended up using 968 Pistons. I saw them side by side s2 cast 968 forged pistons. Also, 1986 turbo rods are forged, but 87-89 are cast.
