It's an Audi factory. Porsche has manufacturing plants in Stuttgart and Leipzig (Cayennes and Carrera GTs are built there). Uusikaupunki factory (Boxsters) is owned by Valmet Automotive, Porsche is just leasing the production.

Olli,

Thanks for the clarification. According to the Neckarsulm home page, they are not currently in Austria and are very close to Stuttgart. My Eurpoean geography is not that good but maybe it used to be within an Austrian border? Then again, maybe not

Neckarsulm - City Web Site (in English)

The Audi presence is mentioned as is that the Wankel engine was invented there by NSU.

I don't think NSU invented the rotary engine, but the world's first Wankel-powered production car was built in the Neckarsulm factory. 2,375 NSU Wankel Spiders were produced between 1964 and 1967. As a tie-in to later Porsche production, most were Rot (red), with white the second most common color. 497 cc rotary producing 50 HP at 6,000 rpm in a 700 kg convertible. Racing versions produced 100 HP at 11,000 rpm. The second rotary car produced was the follow-up NSU Ro 80.

The factory currently produces many of the Audi cars, including the A2, A4, A6, A8, S4, S6, S8, RS 4, RS 6, Allroad, TT. Pretty much all the aluminum-bodied high end Audis.

Porsche Type 32 prototype (Beetle prototype) was produced there too, along with 300,000-odd Porsche 924 and 944 cars between 1975 and 1991.

You ever turn a Wankel in it's case to see the action of the rotor? Don't do it after having a few beers. You'll get dizzy.

My father bought an RX3 in '75. I learned how to drive on that car. It was the wildest little 83 cid engine I have ever seen. (The carb was as big as the engine.)

That's what I thought. Maybe the town is doing some self-promotion or Wankel worked for NSU?

From the cities web page:

Neckarsulm has always been known as a place good for introducing innovative ideas. Decades ago the town's industry held a key position in developing motorcycles, and later, automobiles. The Wankel engine was invented in Neckarsulm by NSU. Today the Audi AG employed 13,500 people in the production of the A2, A6 and A8.

This is definitely wrong, perhaps it should be read "NSU provided Dr Wankel with the possibility to produce his engine on a large scale".
