Default Cruise Control Problem

I have a cruise control problem I wonder if anyone else had. When I start up the car and get up to say 60 mph, I want to set the cruise. So I hit the set on it but instead of staying at 60mph it goes to 70mph? After I cancel it and reset to 60mph SOMETIMES it will stay at 60 and sometimes it will go back up about 10mph from there. Does this happen to anybody else? Anyway to fix it?

It seems to be a common problem with the European units. Friends 2001 Land Rover does the same thing. My 951 does it as well. I set it about 10 miles before my cruise milage and it moves up 10 miles (16 KM in CDN). It seems to slowly drop down 10 and I then use excel to bring it back up.

According to Clarks Garage , this problem is caused by a malfuntioning cruise control servo unit. Instructions for cleaning and testing the servo are provided in the link.

another place to check is the cruise control 'brain' which is under the dash - right next to your left ankle (well, in a left-hand drive car...) long silver box. you can unplug it, remove it, bend back the crimps on the one end (obvious after you get it out) and pull out the circuit board. after a while some of these solder joints go bad. in my previous 86 951, i just put a soldering iron on the capacitor solder connections as well as the main plug connector joints - fixed mine right up and was dead on til the day i sold it.

In clark's garage it says if it is speeding up 5-10 mph that it is the servo and it needs cleaned. Has anyone done this? How long does it take and how hard is it? Thanks.
