Good news everybody!

I put in a new rear main seal and this one is doing it's job. So far I've done around 130km's and she feels great. It's taking a lot of self control to not mash the loud pedal.

Here is a quick walk around.

Clean work quickly done, congrats.

What year is the oil pan? Just asking as it does not feature the later style oil scraper.

Thanks mate. It's the stock 86 oil pan, but I've put a late model plastic baffle in it. I also bolted in a proper crank scraper from paragon, and welded in a lindsey racing style gated baffle.

Ok, and yes I saw the later style plastic baffle.

Curious how needed would be an additional scraper when using a later style oil pan featuring the welded-in scraper...

I was curious on that at first as well. But Bruce Buchanan (Jet951) pointed out to me that even though it looks like a scraper, it is too far away from the crank to be very useful.

In that case there must be 3 variations on the scraper theme :
1/ an early style stock sump features no scraper
2/ a 1st "scraper sump" features a "tall" scraper for use with the 2.5L crank (87/88)
3/ a 2nd "scraper sump" features a "short" scraper for use with the 3L crank (89+)

I am quite sure of the second variation as I had recently a case of a stock "scraper sump" that would not clear a 3L crank.

I imagine that JET951 happened to try a "short scraper sump" with a 2.5L crank?

Ah fair enough. My pan and baffle is the only 944 pan and baffle I've ever seen...so I'm not very familiar with the different versions. The reason I put a new one in mine is because the old was was really brittle and cracked apart when I removed it.

Thanks Patrick...I hope so too, or at least until I have saved up enough to build a 16V 3 litre ;-)

The real test will be it's first track day...then we'll see if it performs as well as it looks.

Well, it's already been a year now since I rebuilt my engine so I thought I'd do a little update. So far she's done just over 8500km, including 6 tracks days without missing a beat. The only things I've had to replace since the rebuild were the fan switch and the O2 sensor, apart from that it has been rock solid. I am extremely happy with how reliable it has been.

Unfortunately I haven't been in the financial position to be able to do any of the further upgrades I had planned, such as VEMs and a new turbo, so those things have been postponed indefinitely for now. That said, I haven't grown bored of it yet, even at near stock power levels she is a lot of fun to drive. And it still looks good!

Great to hear the rebuild is holding up Timm.

I'm keen to check out your engine bay at the next Cars and Coffee. Your wrinkle finished red cam cover has inspired me to do my S2!

Nice.

And congrats.

One thing I just now noticed and I have a question for the RHD guys, the brake master is on left like LHD, is there some kind of horizontal lever/linkage from your pedal set over to the other side that activates the master cylinder...?

Is that not the clutch line in the photo from master to slave?
It covers the letter P on the cam tower, tucks in behind the engine lift point and over to the clamp on the firewall you see just behind the lift point on the back of the cam tower.

Yes it is and you can see the clutch master, all expected for RHD but I always thought their brake master would have been opposite ours but it's not so it must require some kind of linkage system to activate it.
