Default Early water pump question

I have an 86 951 with the original water pump. I'm about to "go in" to do belts and figure to do the pump at the same time. FCP put together a kit for me:

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/por...4410515704kit1

My question is whether I can expect to find the late water pump style with the shim plate in there? Is there any way to tell before I remove the car from the pump?

Regards,

doug

Default Early water pump question

Yes, check zims.. towards the bottom it explains..
http://www.allzim.com/store/remanufa...944-83-86.html

1986 and earlier 944's may have had the Late Version water pump installed. The easiest way to tell is to look at your pump and see if there is a steel deflector bar bolted to the housing.Â*

If yes, you need the Late Version pump.Â*
If no, you need the Early Version

Additionally, you can look at the smooth timing belt idler roller. If it is 47mm (1 7/8 in) in diameter, you need the Late Version pump. If it is 33mm (1 1/8 in) in diameter, you need the Early Version pump.

Unfortunately, I can't see which idler wheel size I have, or if I have the belt deflector until I get almost everything off the car. So I need to do ~1/2 the job before I can order parts.

I'd convert to the updated pump anyways even if you have the early one.

That is the plan. The issue is that not knowing whats in there now, I don't know if I need to buy the update kit or not. So when did the update show up in production?

From what I've read on here, the late 80s. You can pull the outer belt cover in 2 minutes to get a visual on the water pump, and the deflector bar or lack thereof.

+1 might as well just go to the late style.
If you need a deflector bar (if pump doesn't come with it), I have one you can have along with its special nuts, for the cost of shipping.

Is there anything else, like say balance shaft seals, that I should be doing while I'm in there? Nothing is leaking a lot, everything looks like its weeping, but nothing has been cleaned off in 30 years.

Balance shaft front seals+o rings..
Cam front seal + o-rings...
crank front seal + o-ring...

I'll see about getting the guide rail thing out tomorrow.

I guess I can't complain about a job I have to do once every 30 years.

For that money, check out 944online. You get everything needed plus the seals & gasket to reseal the oil cooler. The only thing you'd need to buy is coolant.

OK, so the fcp guys have put together kits for the water pump, belts rollers, thermostats, a bolt, all the seals for the shafts and cam, plus the accessory belts and the crank front seal.

And here I thought I was gonna drive the car this year.

I'm a little nervous about the cam gear, as the DIY warns that rotation will drive the valves into the piston. Any suggestions? Would loosening that bolt with belts and crank lock on help? Is there an orientation of the crank that would allow the cam to spin freely?

doug

You really should read Clark's write-up of belt and water pump replacement. The overall is setting tdc, locking flywheel, loosen belt tension, remove belts, remove back cover, remove water pump. Do not rotate cam on vehicle because that is especially bad with belts off. With belts on, rotate crank bolt while finding tdc, not cam.

I read that. Its the comment "Do not rotate cam on vehicle because that is especially bad with belts off" that worries me. The bolt holding on the cam gear is 30 years old, and I'm worried about getting it loose with zero rotation.
