No they weren't advertising. In fact if you went to Gulf and said you saw the 917 they would not sell you any gas. WHat I am saying and to further illuminate.
Today's cars have 10 to 20 sponsers with various stickers and so forth on different parts of the car depending on how much sponsership money they are paying. The overall effect is aesthetically a mess, albiet effective for the sponsers. With the gulf livery they had the whole car, I just liked that paint scheme and the simplicity of the presentation. Even better I guess are the pre-sponsership cars with nothing but mfr colors.
