Question Should I overfill during Oil change

I've seen a few reports of hard cornering oil starvation on 1986 951's. Our pans seem to be deep enough to slightly overfill when doing an oil change without the risk of frothing.

IIRC, book says I need 6.8 liters (roughly 6.5 quarts if my math is correct) so would I be wrong to put 7 quarts? How much are you putting in?

2nd question, I'm sure that even after letting the car drain for a good while all the oil hasn't come out. Anyone have a good guess how much is the residual?

I overfill a bit...I think it is a little over 7L... but not sure how much as my mechanic ground the dipstick to show the proper overfill mark so I am not sure where the stock fill level was and he does the oil changes when he checks the car over between track days

1/2 quart over is all you need. Any more than that and the crank could start whipping it up. Foamy oil is no good for bearings.

I filled it (accidentally) just past the full mark on the stick. No problems so far (2 weeks and maybe 100 miles).

According to Chris White .. you should not overfill the oil pan. The crank can actually sit in oil ... when over filled. The only way to correct the problem is a dry sump, or baffled oil pan and pickup, and air oil seperator.

ELLSSUU, by the way 6.8 litres is actually 7.16 quarts, so 7 quarts total wouldn't hurt. You have to check the dipstick as you may not be getting all the old oil out of the cooler lines etc. I would agree that a tiny bit over may not hurt, but too much will definitely cause some additional foaming.

How much do you think you can overfill before it reaches the crank? It must be hard to tell that, unless you fill it up off the car and know where the crank extends to. You'd also have to know how much oil is in the engine at high rpm etc.

I don't overfill mine by much, but a half liter or so probably won't make much difference.
