Default How many miles?

I've seen a lot of other forums with a "how many miles" type of post. I know that doesn't necessarily apply to our cars since our odometer gears usually leave the car at somewhere around 120k, and most of us have rebuilt a motor or 3....

That said - how many miles on your 951? Plz post mods, rebuilds, or other pertinent facts. I'm very curious how long a stock, well maintained, 951 will go.

I think I'm at somewhere around 150k on a chipped motor. So far so good.

Just crossed the 200,000 mark on the way back from Watkin's Glen a few months ago. The car is bone stock. As far as I can tell the head's never even been off. But it does have a few driveability issues that I'm having a hell of a time tracking down.

I like the numbers so far.

Browsing these forums can be very informative and very scary.

The bulk of the people here are on here for support in one form or another. Between all of the problems people are asking about, and the engines that are being rebuilt on a routine basis, you'd really think these cars were just ticking time bombs.

Well bear in mind that you only hear about the problems on the internet, for the most part. The vast majority of 944 owners don't even have a rennlist account and never will.

Also a large proportion of rennlisters modify their cars, or buy them modified. Once you do that, you introduce so many new variables that they're just not comparable to each other any more.

I totally agree, that's why I wanted to get something like this out there. If you ask me they're very well built cars. They feel solid and planted while still maintaining a pretty lean curb weight, and all of the major bits will stand up long term with basic maintenance. Even shutting the doors is satisfying, especially compared to modern cars.

I do wish our parts prices would come down a bit though.

151,000. replaced the block when a head gasket ring broke and scored my cylinder 3 wall. Funny enough the motor ran great, even with the coolant flowing into my cylinder. I got a great deal on a new block, had the head completely renewed and been running the car confidently for a few years now. From my experience these cars are super reliable if you don't abuse them and take notice to the little things. These cars give early warning signs and you need to identify them when you see them. It's not a car that you can put off maintainance. Treat it well and it will be reliable.

My odometer stopped working a few years ago at ~192k, so I'm well past that; 1989, all original.

My '86 ran for ~225k before it caught fire, with a replacement long block that probably had 35k fewer miles than that.

87 951 street driven track car. I haven't rebuilt the sunroof motor yet. Or build a new chassis wire harness. I would say almost EVERYTHING else has been rebuilt. 0 miles on rebuilt torque tube, AOR trans, wheel bearings, brakes, all solid and mono ball upgrades to the suspension, Charlie arms w/20mm pins and solid rear mount, 30mm front sway w/new bushing and stiffener bracket, 19mm rear sway bar w/racers edge mounts and adjustable drop links, elephant racing polybronze spring plate mounts, mono ball trailing arm mount, solid torsion tube mounts, 30mm rear torsion bars, Koni adjustable rear shocks, Koni double adjustable front shocks w/400lbs front springs, M030 front spindles and hubs and brakes, longer wheel studs all around,86 rear axle hubs for the 18"X11"/8" turbo twist rims, ultra LR trany mount, 044 bosch fuel pump, stainless brake lines, custom bump steering kit w/new inner tie rods, resealed steering rack and pump and updated P/S pump hose, has a lightweight aluminum flywheel, rebuilt k26-8, autothority MAF, LR fuel rail, 55 fuel injectors w/resistors, updated crossover pipe, Kevlar timing belt, 3 K on the engine, clutch, axles. Bought my '89 turbo a couple of years ago at 86k, it now has 104k. After catching it up on the usual maintenance items, it has been 100% reliable when I used it as a daily driver for almost a year. I'm taking it on its relo trip from NC to its (and my) new home in MD this afternoon. No worries here. It has turned out to be more reliable than I anticipated.

This all makes me feel alot better. When I picked mine up with roughly 160-ish miles on it, I wasn't sure what to expect. My E30 has 229k or so and is still great.

Now I'm doing maintenance on it. Once get my timing belt/rollers/balance shaft belts out of the way, I suspect I'll have a nice reliable car.

Consider overhauling the cooling system. At the very least, I'd recommend keeping a spare heater valve, and a spare for the little plastic port that screws into the radiator. Any reliability issues I've had, it's typically been cooling system related.
