Cool Milledge or Powerhaus?

How would you spend your $20K for 500 reliable horespower?

You gotta have something to save for, cause you don't want to go 996...

The only way you're going to get 500 reliable HP for $20k is to do it yourself.

500Hp on a dyno isn't the same as 500Hp on a track with sustained loads. BIG Difference.

Just price out the cost of the exhaust setup (4 into 1 header, cross over, and turbo back exhaust with mufflers), Mocal oil cooler, and the larger intercooler and you'll eat up about 1/3 your budget. Figure $7k

Now price in the turbo ($1500 at least), the head (a real head/valvetrain will run you at least $4k),

Electronics/gauges, wastegate, maf, etc... another $2k

We haven't even touched the short block yet. Figure at least $6k for a good short block.. probably more like $7k.

Stand alone engine management?
Dyno time to setup/tune?
Clutch/flywheel?
Custom Intake Manifold/Throttle Body? (The trick Milledge intake is $5600)

The point is that your best bet is to do it yourself. You can get someone to install the short block... then from there do the rest yourself.

You could get close on $20k that way.

There is no comparison between Powerhaus and John Milledge. Milledge has forgotten more than those guys will ever know.

Bids starting at 6,000 and another 1, 000 to put it in !!! If this isn't a wet dream, I never had one and I want one - not the dream the engine.

Sorry, but that's the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard.

Let's see.... "we're auctioning off an engine that does not exist, but we're going to complete it once we get the money. And... I know how much this costs to build, but I'm not going to tell you. But you can bid on it, even though it does not exist, and if the price gets high enough, where I think I can make a profit, I'll sell it to you... well what I mean is that I'll build one for you."

"you really don't win anything except a contract for us to build you an engine". "Yes I know that it's not really a contract.... but take our word for it, we'll build you one nice and purty just like the picture".

Give me a damn break.

Now that's a race car!

At least you are bidding on something that exists!

Is $20k a realistic figure for, say, a monster 3.0 951 engine ?

(I need to ask since I have absolutely no idea how much JME or PH ask for building such an engine ...)

I believe each customer engine is tailor made, so let's say I would like :
- 3.0, preferably 8V.
- 75% road use, 25% track day
- 400 rwhp
- reliability to the point of being able to do more than 50,000 miles between two rebuilds

Does this sound realistic/doable ?

Probably not. Not by the time you finish buying all the things and making all the modifications necessary to do it reliably at (> 400RWHP) 1 bar boost level.

Funny, just talking to David at Powerhaus yesterday. He said you can walk in here with $25 grand and you can a 500 hp car give or take. To address reliability issues, David has my motor in his car with over 90K miles on it and all he ever replaced was a water pump. Living in the desert, that's pretty much normal. I would set aside a few grand for incidentals myself. Not taking anything away from Milledge though. I saw Eric's car. That intake blew my mind. I also believe that John has forgotten more than what most have learned. With that said, look at my numbers and the fact that I only have 52 lb injectors, a 2.5 inche exhaust and a motor that has set even more since the last dyno.
Tony, Eric, and Chris: great to me you guys in Ventura over the weekend.
For the rest of you, check the administative post coming from John D. If you like my car and would like a chance to own it for $100 and a warranty, here's your chance. I've just given it to charity. All I ask is that if you win it, can you make me a screaming deal on yours so i can build another? Thanks.
