Default Dash cap for my 944 turbo

I was just wondering if any one has ever attempted to put on one of those plastic dash cap covers on their car that you can buy on Ebay. I have seen some ****ty jobs and I have seen some OK jobs but does any one know if you can get those things on there perfect. I am assuming that a heat gun may help or having the right glue or epoxy. I found one on Ebay in brand new condition but it doesn't come with any instructions or glue. I am considering the dash cap as opposed to buying a dash mat, however a dash mat might look OK but I leaning towards putting on one of those dash caps if I can get it to look good. What do you guys think. I don't have the money right now to buy a completely new dashboard so this is the route i think i will be taking. Thanks Larry.

As noted in prior threads, you may wish to consider this:

This route is less expensive, and gives you a choice of colors to match your interior. Our dashboards are relatively simple convex shapes, but still it's best to use a stretchy material, as is common for recovering motorcycle seats, etc. So, you may want to consult with an upholsterer or motorcycle seat specialist and ask what they use.

Otherwise, a guy on Bimmerforums reports that the cloth backing on vinyl upholstery material can be removed with Goof Off or similar solvent, so he has a wider choice of colors and textures from materials that otherwise are not conformable enough. (Without the cloth backing, the material is much more ductile, so stays glued down even in concave areas. The dashboard supports the material, so the material does not need cloth backing in that application, unlike, say, seat covers.)

When I was looking at dash recovering options, I was going to purchase a leather cover from 928 leather. Called my bud, John at www.highspeedcustoms.com to talk with one of his upholstery pro's. He showed me two custom car interiors and asked to tell him which one was real leather. I honestly couldn't tell the difference!

One of the manufacturers had a leather look specifically designed for dashes that have no glare, even when you detail it. He installed this material on my dash in a few hours OVER my old dash. It's thin and stretches. He shared the factory material, once scuffed, and the cracks are flat, this breathable material will stick much better.

Just a thought to consider. I think the materials were under $200, including the new upper dash vents they made there to cover the factory defrost vents. This is what it's looks like after 8 years.

I'm glad I didn't use "real" leather, as you can't tell the difference, and the reduction in glare is awesome.
