Default Those with a 968 Six Speed - What's the Verdict?

I tried searching....but really couldn't find what I was looking for. My 87 951 has the 5 speed, it's okay, but was wondering for those who have put in a six speed, how do you like it?

1st gear in my car is super quick, have to lift at 5K so it doesn't over rev (have light weight flywheel) and after that no problems.

After owning a 968, I really liked the transmission a lot, plus my transmission has issues with the "coast" side of the rear gear, just makes noise, something that I live with, no big deal.

On the 968, are the gears too short? or are they just fine for the turbo?

Thanks!

for the street, you'd likely benefit from 6 gears, as you're able to stay near the engine's top power a bit longer.

speed will top out at about 165mph with a full sized rear tire...

if you're running a lot of power, a 5 speed with the n/a 5th gear is the best combo $$$ wise,

as swapping out 6th gear to .600 on the 968 box is quite expensive.

I considered doing a 968 swap a few years ago, and when looking at ratios + watching a few on-board videos of swapped cars, felt like there was a LOT of shifting involved. The ratios are nice and close but the 951 has such a fat midrange, it overall looked to me like it might've just been too much gear.

I did an S2 gearbox swap instead and LOVE IT.

1st gear is definitely SHORT tho. But all the rest of the gearing is awesome. Next AX event we're at together (once my car is back together), I'll let you drive mine.

No experience with the 968 G box, but I also did the S2 box, and I can honestly say its the best mod I've done for a street car. Low first gear makes driving in town with the AC on suck much less, and the ratios are such that autocross is actually fun!... Though I've had to shift to 3rd at both autocrosses I've attended. Rev limiter kicking in at exactly 60mph in 2nd gear.

I had S2 gears in my AOR and found they are MUCH MUCH smaller then the turbo ring and pinion gears. My pinion gear chipped on my S2 gears so I want back to the beefy turbo ring and pinion.

Tiny S2 gear couldn't handle the turbo! If 6 speed has same tiny gear I would stick to the 5 speed turbo trany. Is has much much bigger ring and pinion to handle the power!

I had a 6 speed from a 968 clubsport in my -89 Turbo Cup car. As I also have a -86 Turbo Cup I could easily compare and to me I like the 5-speed better. I thought that I had to shift alot with the 968 box. On some tracks the turbo box is better and on some the other way around.

For the street I would definetely go with the 5 speed.

Good luck!
