Turbo exploded at the Glen
The k27/8 is no more. What was left of the impeller core was blown through the air intake cone, there is shrapnel everywhere and it lost a bunch of oil.
I'm still out of town so limited computer access and I haven't had a full look. What might cause this and how kaput is the engine after this?
It kind of ran after but with a huge vacuum leak not well. And some some random clicking.

Exhaust looks fine but there's a generous chance it sucked little pieces in as well as the fine dust.
Could 18 psi of boost been to much? I had the turbo serviced two years ago. I wonder if that did it in?

I have a k27/8 I run at about 18psi.. it hasn't been touched in years and it still does well. I doubt it failed in 2 yrs without something going through it.

Where did you get the k27/8? It was one of mines?

In retrospect the air filter is older and the seam must have torn open from that pressure and sucked something in.
The car stopped running right instantly. Huge vacuum leak. Lots of little metal pieces in the engine bay so the cold side of turbo must have a hole.
I ran it for maybe 5 minutes total in the pits after because the signs were not obvious. It sounded like a vac hose blew off and there were no fluid leaks at first. Was trying to find the vac leak.
Not a Lart part. It came from Paragon over a decade ago. Had about 15k miles on it total but I had it rebuilt recently. She will be missed :P

You will probably be okay. You may want to do a leak down, and if you have use a bore scope to check the internals. But agreed the intercooler should have filtered the big chunks. Looks like it is time for an upgrade.

How should I clean out the intercooler?
What would be a good bolt in upgrade to the 27-8?
I won't have the 3.0 ready until next year but it would be nice to have a turbo I could reuse for that project.

Going with a GTX35 or GTX30 would be the best compliment to the 3.0 - the GTX3071R is probably what I will chose for my post 3.0 build. It offers quicker spool times (than the GTX35) and should take the car to 400hp easily. The GT35 is pretty common for 3.0 builds, but it is a bit too big for me as I don't need the 600hp numbers (and the longer spool times).

I'm confused - what tubing had rips in it?
I would not expect any turbo shrapnel to go out via the air filter. If the engine is spinning, then air is generally only going to go one direction - towards the engine.
