Hate to bog down Lucky Dave's thread with engine swap talk...

My cam has +2 degrees overlap; general rule of thumb on the LS1 is anything over 0 degrees and it probably wont pass a sniffer; let alone dyno testing in CA. So in order to get it to pass i need to source all f-body Camaro parts; manifolds, cats, engine, evap parts, harness, injectors and swap the cam. Sourcing the part is easy, the hard part is getting everything to fit. And i have heard the same regarding aftermarket software..so its a crapshoot where i would be in 2-3 years for retesting even if i did get it to pass. Its just not worth it. I would be better off selling the entire engine package and getting the CARB compliant LS3 which includes everything and wont require much in way of tuning.

And i am aware of the OBD2 scan only deal for 2000+ model year cars; i just smogged my '03 540i last week. Scan only... i was paranoid because while the car runs great, it does have nearly 100k miles on the original cats.

to go even further off topic, i took my newly-bought 97 subaru to get smogged a few weeks ago, thinking it would get just OBD checked but the guy put it on the rollers because it was pre 99/2000.
original cats, 190,000 miles and it passed with crazy low numbers.

I have more overlap than you do and I easily passed. The cam isn't going to be an issue. Not saying it's not alot of other work to get the car referree'd in Cali, but the cam won't stop it from passing.

You'll have to move soon anyways because you won't be able to add water to your radiator.

The CA population is to blame ... for decades every Democrat D bag was voted in from top to bottom .... the liberals dream , everything controlled from cradle to grave.

Libs Hippies Dopers Sexually perverted anti gun Abortion millions of illiterate non English speaking illigals corrupt to the bone bankrupt educational and fiscal system...the years I lived there are like a bad dream.

What's sad is CA emissions are getting stricter while many other states are phasing out emissions testing since new car emissions are so low nowadays. Gas cars 2009+ and passenger diesel 2006+ are emissions exempt in WA now. Emissions testing in WA is expected to be completely eliminated by 2020.

+1
Even in the whacked out state of Illinois we got rid of the rolling dyno test and only test vehicles with odb II plugs. I believe everything older than 1996 is exempt. I highly doubt we used common sense to make this decision. A more likely scenario is a state worker probably trashed a car on the dyno and the owner sued the state and won.

That's how things work here.

Find a beater 944 - cheapo paint job to match the car you REALLY want to drive.

Get it smogged, then plated. Use plate on the Car you want to drive.

Problem solved.

Your Welcome.

This is a good solution. Many rural areas outside of the Urban centers in CA are smog exempt.

Colorado used to be 25 years, then they changed it to follow Cali, so 1975! Then this past January, they changed it again, but rather than back to the old 25 year rule they used to have, it's now 32 years.

Argh! My car would've fallen under the 25 year rule last year...

Changing plates in Ca is a felony

Cal Veh Code § 4463 (2009)
