The VW coil-on-plug coils are pretty notorious for dying prematurely...
I've tested the red R8 version.
That is a horrible spot for the coil - hot, vibration, limited core-style options.
You would be much better off with the D514a coils. They might not look quite as clean, but they are significantly better.

I've had great performance and reliability out of the D514a coils I've used with my engjne management kits.
I'd be interested in some feedback on a good stick coil for a 16V engine.

We have used VAG TFSI coils in many engines and I use them rigt now on my 2.5 16v turbo. No issues at all.
One of the local guys has Audi A4 1.8turbo which runs on ethanol and is one of the most powerful such engines in the world (1000+ hp) and he uses VAG COP and VEMS ECU. Works like a charm.

The focus of the investigation involves ignition coils, a trouble spot for the German brand since at least 2003, when the automaker admitted problems with its 2001-2 4-cylinder engines. That population of vehicles appears to be covered in the new investigation.
The coils are used to generate the high-voltage current that fires spark plugs, and VW dedicates one coil for each plug. On the 4-cylinder models being investigated, then, there would be four ignition coils. When a coil fails, the spark plug does not fire and the engine loses power.
Last August, N.H.T.S.A. opened a so-called preliminary evaluation — a low-level inquiry — into an estimated 199,000 Passats from the 2002-3 model years. The primary concern was fires caused by failing ignition coils.

I know this well.
The issues have been with earlier revisions, these are pretty much not available anymore.
One more example: I installed VEMS onto my friends Porsche 928 S 4.7 back in 2006 and we wanted COP ignition and had short 2.3 V5 engine coils laying around (late revision, though made by Eldor). These run perfectly ever since and last two years in turbocharged environment (car is pushing ~720 hp right now).
