That sucks. Good luck. I hope it's not too bad.

Depending on how high you actually did rev it, anything over about 7500 will float the valves, and usually mushroom the lifter head. Be sure to check all the lifters as well when you get it apart.

If you had smoke "pour" out of the engine bay and it locked up shortly after, about the only thing that would allow both to happen is a tossed rod. I think you would hear that too, since it would make a hell of a noise.

In any case, you'll need to get into the motor to see what's up. Let us know.

I am real sorry to read about your loss. I wish that I lived nearby. I'd love to help and learn how to rebuild a motor.

Ya know... I think its high time we had a "we're gonna build an engine" party in Kansas City. Vince, Ben and Steve, I know you guys will be up for that. Anyone else?

I'm thinking we will start having a regularly scheduled maintenance/wrenching get together at my place on for two hours or so, once a week. I am thinking Staurdays from 10-noon. If you have a project that you want to work on, let me know. Ben, I know we need to get those tranny drain plugs out on your car.

Regards,

If you tossed a rod you sure would have heard it.

Hell of a noise followed by metal chunks falling under the car and oil comes out of the holes in the oilpan causing a fire ball.

That's what happened in my case

Agreed...

If you broke a rod.... there would be no question as to the damage because you would be hearing very loud, solid, metal to metal contact.

Although you wouldn't necessarily be seeing oil and metal on the ground... but it's a strong probability (I didn't when my previous 2.5L brand new engine threw a rod at 200+ miles).

No word yet seems to indicate an internal problem which cannot be seen from the outside. Hopefully this rules out the Rod theory. Glad to see you weren't driving after drinking. Could have been worse. Car in good working condition and licence broke!

Sorry to hear that. Over-rev's, caused by a mis-shift, usually bend valves -- I hope thats what happened, and that there's not too much damage.

You also could of skipped a timing belt.

Since your car is an 86, your rods are forged. Let's hope they held up.

Keep us posted.

Update:

I haven't had alot of free time to work on the car, but I have gotten the intake manifold and timing belt cover off. First, I noticed that the timing belt was really loose. I tried to turn the cam pulley to get Cyl 1 to TDC. It turned freely, and suddenly stopped about 2 teeth before it got to TDC. Thats pretty ominous. Also, the Rotor broke off in the distributor cap, and there was a scrape on the inside of the cap where the rotor obviously slammed into the inner wall and broke off.

My hypothesis is that I skipped timing and a piston slammed into a open valve on either the #1 or #4 cyl, and that force was transferred into the camshaft enough to unseat it enough to cause the rotor to crash into the distributor cap. I think I am looking at some serious damage, but I won't know for sure until I can get enough free time to get the head off.

Let me know your thoughts...

My thoughts.. finish getting the head off and see if you holed a piston. If you have dimples on any of the pistons, be sure to pull the motor and check the bottom end, especially the piston and rod that got dinged.

Interesting on the rotor.. even if the cam tower were to lift, there's really no reason for the rotor to let go. It, and the cap, would rise with the tower.

Did you find where the smoke came from?

The problem with the Rotor and Cap are minor here. Most probably the Cam went forward. If the Camshaft broke in half, then the Timing belt pulled the Camshaft forward. The best thing here is to check all parts as damage can occur at the Btm too. Pistons stop, and the Valve hits, all the force is transferred into the Rod bearing. If the bearing is pancaked slightly, further use without the proper clearances will result in further damage. Give knowledgeable people a call here. They can help. Any damage not seen in the tear down could come back later to bite you. These peolpe can give you things to look for. If things look good, then alot of work and $ can be saved. Good luck.
