I have the Brey-Krause strut bar. It looks to be thicker than the other ones, and I personally think it looks the best. You can see a picture of it in my sig.

MaDAnT26x,
Nice car! Did you have check it on the dyno? I'd like to know how much power you're getting those mods.

Hey streckfu's951, thank you. The pictures are a little dated though, as the car was sagging hella bad in the rear because of the aged torsion bars and shocks. It's much better now . I haven't gotten a chance to dyno the car yet, but the past owner said it put down around 235 - 240 at the wheels with the Autothority Stg2 chips. Since then I have put on the exhaust, LBE, Guru chips, and a newly rebuilt top end. I'd guess I'm putting down around 250-260 at the wheels, maybe more. Last time I was at the track I was passing C5 vette's on the straights, so who knows, I definitely need to get it on a dyno.

87uk944t, the Brey-Krause is very expensive, and came with my car. You should check out the KLA strut bar, they're a great company and you'd be helping out a fellow Rennlister .

We sell them all so it's no big deal to me, but as Scott mentioned, KLA produces a strut brace for your car that is great looking AND affordable. Doesn't usually work that way, but it's nice when it does!

As for performance... It seems to work, but have no hard proof.

As for cost...Well I got it a few years back and it seemed decient at the time.

I'm also looking for a strutbrace and found this one on a Dutch website.

I don't know if this one really work. It's only attached to the two inner bolts of the strut and it's made of aluminium. Will this be strong enough?

Thumbs up

Here's the Brey Krause version. I like the looks of it but it is not the cheapest version out there...

Save your money.

A real strut brace, one that actual works, is either a triangulated or X design.

The tower-to-tower designs are pretty much useless IMHO, and I've owned a few of them.

I've never been able to feel or detect any difference with the typical strut brace on these cars either on or off the track.

Find someone to build you one that goes from strut tower to strut tower and to the engine fire wall (triangulated design). It will money well spent.

As for the actual functionality of the strut brace, it has been a long disputed topic here. Do a search for some very entertaining reading. The fact that Porsche installed them in the 944 race cars (albeit welded in) shock tower to shock tower is proof enough to me that there is a need and they serve SOME purpose. Sure, triangulated would be better but the factory would definately NOT add weight if their wasn't a need for it.

Graeme,

There are a lot of strongly held opinions regarding strut braces. Many people view them as "eye candy" only.

I still have the Racing Dynamics strut brace installed by the previous owner. I've never had it off the car, so I can't recommend it as yet. I don't really know if it makes a difference on my 951.

My previous car, a '98 E36 M3, had a tower-to-tower front strut brace, an x-brace (x-shaped, mounted underneath the front of the car to prevent chassis flex during cornering, although I can't remember exactly where the attachment points were), and a rear tower strut brace. I installed each brace sequentially, over a period of months.

IMO, each brace made some difference (to the positive), the x-brace being the best by far. I felt that they tightened the chassis somewhat and improved steering response a bit, although the difference wasn't night/day. Other M3 drivers couldn't feel ANY difference with their front/rear stb's. In the BMW community there were also arguments about the construction of the various stb's. Some preferred non-hinged, pre-load braces, while others didn't care.

I'd recommend driving a 944 with a strut tower brace, to see if it makes enough of a difference to justify the purchase. If you're intent on buying one, make sure you have enough hood clearance. My RD brace barely fits.

My VW gti's loved any bracing you could throw at them! It only makes sense, The more you tie the frame together the stronger it will be. X-bracing or not.
