Neither are women, but most of us still manage to get laid at some point....
Fortunately the gap between a 944 with no aero, and a 944 approaching the theoretically optimum aero is vast and there is plenty of room for worthwhile gains at many levels in between without having to access a wind tunnel, which realistically is never going to be an option for the majority of people, or frankly even necessary at the levels most of us are competing. The benefit or otherwise of basic aero aids such as wings and splitters, are easy enough to assess simply by fitting them and doing plenty of comparative track testing.

ps....any progress on your new motor?
I might still try it one day if I run out of projects. I would just mount the rear adjustable control rods to extension rods running down to actuators in the base of the strut housings. All sorts of fun options for controlling them with the Motec based on road speed, brake pressure etc. New motor won't get done till next year now as I am back in Dubai on another contract.
Steve, that would be the way to go. Get the ECU to control it off lateral G loadings or road speed or something. Could get pretty funky. As you say the bottom line in unscientific experimentation is lap times. That's pretty vague as is. Maybe corner speeds. Be a bit of fun.
Ernie, while a full wind tunnel is way out of reach for most of the 944 community, it doesn't cost a stupid amount to get a car laser scanned and come up with some cfd. Might even happen to a lister or two.
Hi, Patrick , we are going make it affordable for base line testing. At least get a base line of what you think is good or not. Surprising results I have found.
Brooks Motorsports is right in your backyard! Go talk with Kyle and Cody and they will get you set up. My brooks wing is nasa legal and you can still open and close the rear hatch. Chris Mayfield (NASA TT3 National Champ) runs one on his E36. Todd Wayman also runs one on his 944 v8 and is the central region TT2 champ a few years in a row now. Well worth the money!
I think it's funny that some people say that you need a wind tunnel to make it right... because not even a wind tunnel will answer everything. Most of them doesn't have rolling floor and then you're not analyzing underbody aero the right way and not taking into account the massive turbulence created by the wheels turning so you're only analyzing half of it.
So to make it "right" you need CFD, wind tunnel, track testing etc. Everything! And not even then you will find a "right" solution. Just look at F1 when they do massive CFD work together with tunnel work and they still need track aero testing and then in the end finding out that some stuff didn't work as they expected...
Yes, that's something that everyone kind of overlooks. Cars are hardly ever heading in a perfectly straight line and without bumps on the track. So Wind Tunnels are only part of the process.
