Default Racers, how are you running rear aero?

Debating adding real rear aero to my car. However, I drive my car on the street and I need the ability to open/close the rear hatch.

Is there a way to do that with the large rear wing installed? Or some way to easily mount/dismount the wing quickly?

TIA!

Yes, this one.

I did a lot of research about rear wings & aero and I bought this one from Scott.
Great guy!

Looks like a nice product. Do you have to remove the factory rear wing to fit it? Ouch on the cost!

If you go with additional rear aero you need to improve the front aero also.

BTW, it is "real areo" so you need to balance the car with a very good splitter.
And the right springs...

Looks to be a pretty decent product and the build quality looks good also. That's not expensive for what they're offering. You can buy a cheap Ebay wing and make custom mounts but it needs to attach to something solid, not just the rear bumper panel for example. Not sure what downforce this wing offers but they've added a gurney as well. I would say that with this alone you will be chasing frontal downforce and would probably need to make changes up there also. Good Aero sell a modular splitter system which might suit your needs?

With what little I've learned over the last year or so, Aero is indeed an interesting and dark art. Just chucking bits and pieces onto cars is pretty hit and miss and can actually hurt the overall performance of the car, but without doing pretty major changes you're not going to know one way or the other.

Patrick it is a great product and it is actually built by Crawford for Good Aero.
If you want to talk about aero, Scott knows his stuff.
Btw, Disasterman use this wing.

Cyril, yes, I knew all that and can't fault the wing. It looks very nicely built. I've spoken with Scott and he's a good guy to deal with also.

For a race car you do what you have to do for functionality. Personally I don't like the aesthetics of most of the mounting systems people have come up with (except my own ), especially all of the ones mounted to the rear panels which detract from the clean look of the 944 rear end. If I was inclined to put a wing on a road car I would try creating a solid strip section blended to the bodywork and matched to the hatch profile across the lower end of the hatch areas to solid mount the wing to and then shorten the hatch slightly so it can open in front of the wing. Sort of like my pathetic drawing attempt below.

Steve, your setup reminds me of a concept I thought of to implement a form of basic DRS. I was thinking that if one could mount some form of spring or even something like a hatch holderer upperer (too tired to think of the name) inside the wing struts you could make the wing flatten out at speed as forced down by the air itself, but then rise up when going through sweepers and slower corners. Sort of a self regulating DRS system. Perhaps this was conjured up late at night but I reckon it could be made to work. The only issue might be lack of eligibility in running something like this in most competitions.

You should try it, like most competition it's only ineligible if you get caught....!
At one stage I got excited with the idea of putting mini servo motors in the wing strut housings and having a cockpit adjustable wing angle, but then I remembered I'm not an F1 driver....

That's why I like my system. With the size of your wing supports you could run the 'hatch shock' inside and it would be set & forget. Take a bit of experimentation and who knows quite how advantageous it would be at most of our power levels...but a bit of fun nonetheless. Don't think it would take long to get caught though.

ps....any progress on your new motor?

The problem would be in the really fast sweepers. The only way to do it is electronically so you can flat it out at say 150 km/h when going down the straight but then when you enter T1 at Eastern Creek at 200+ you probably want maximum wing
Without taking the cornering, or braking, forces into consideration it will not be a very effective system. And probably very scary too.

Plus when you're approaching a corner in 250-270 km/h you damn want that rear downforce when you're stepping on the brakes!

Let alone when you don't use the brakes at all!

Hey it was just the meanderings of a sleepless mind in the early hours of a morning. I visualised it being self setting based on the spring rate..but the trial and more importantly, error might be a little interesting!!!
