Question The quest begins....

New enthusiast to the 944/951 family and have begun the search for my first porsche.

Would love to get some feedback on a couple of avenues that have been rattling around in my head for the last couple of years and I figured there was no way around just asking the pro's!

I have begun to recognize that 944/951 owners are a rare breed and take monster pride in what I feel like is a completely underrated series of vehicles and I am hoping to dig in a begin a long journey of knowledge and; yes, I know, lots of costs, ha.

A little background; my original intent was to get a weekender driver with some street credit (951 in my view) and be able to tinker of a few of the easier project with the 13 year old while putting no track time in and just making runs to the club.

My challenge has been weeding through what seems on a basic level, 2 types of postings (not necessarily on Rennlist, which I have decided to purchase off of rather than a craigs list, dealer, or ebay)

Track tools vs Complete Restores

Many of the beautiful 951s have been super well maintained but have had their days on the track. question is can these "rode hard and put up wet" beauties live out their lives cleaned up with out much issue or will they continue to need constant work and find themselves outside my abilities without constant shop time and money.

Complete Restores are obviously a wonderful place to start but I would like to find something in the 8K range and hope to have it 85% to 95% there before everyday maintenance kicks in.

Any thoughts are appreciated and I have many more ideas but was hoping to start some dialogue going if it's not too much to ask!

The 951 is to the track as the Labrador is to the water - it can't resist jumping in. It will jump up and wag its tail if it even thinks the track is on the agenda. It was a car built to run - to not let it do so is a life unfulfilled. Welcome aboard!

Ahh, so maybe I am only delaying the inevitable! I have seen a few posts from you and your 951 looks prestine along with several other rennlist members like Paully and Refresh, are you spending much time on the track or more DE's? Do you have a set up pics as I am a huge fan of white cars. Thanks for chiming in!

See to me that's not a track tool, are you doing driver experiences? I want to keep the interior classic not NASCAR style if that make sense?

Yes I am just doing DEs with it. I would like to have a bolt in cage/real seats in it at some point.
I have done Konis, stiffer springs (375lb up front, 30mm bars in the back) and solid bushings in the rear, haven't finished the front yet. Aggressive alignment so it is getting more towards 'track' than 'street' but still trying to keep it nice. Track use will definitely wear things out quicker, but the 951 is great fun when you get to beat on it some.

How competent a mechanic are you? If very, great. If you are a newbie to project cars, I would honestly suggest you look at a 968 instead. They've gone way up in value, though, so one in your budget may need some TLC. An S2 is another option. Turbos are wonderful when they work well. When they don't, they are a nightmare.

Good idea. Any chance "some point" might be before this weekend!?

Yes, the S2 is a good option assuming I can find one and I really love the idea of the 968 but do not want to go down the road with the Tiptronic to be honest. I have Tip on my E350 and all I can say is ...boring!

Having said that I have to say that Refresh's 968 spoiler conversion is what ramped everything up for me and started me down this rabbit hole!

Why do you reference a Tiptronic with the 968?
