Default Need to replace my odometer gear, tips?

I've done this before on a Mk2 GTI, I've read the Clarks Garage write up. Any other tips I should know about before I take my cluster apart?

really easy job, I've done them in under half-hour total. Can't think of any tips per se, just have some decent small Phillips(star) screwdrivers and a safe place to set the screws...wind the dial counter-clockwise while slowly pulling it off(and mark or take pics of the location beforehand) to avoid breaking the dial/needle

Under 30 minutes including R&R'ing the cluster? Wow.

Be careful with the needle - people says it's piece of cake to remove it but mine was probably glued to the shaft. It took a lot of sweat to pry it out without breaking anything. The rest of the process is pretty much straight forward.

^yup, on a non-airbag car, cluster is out in a couple minutes...
IIRC, wheel off, 6 screws to pull surround off, 4 screws to hold cluster in, 3 wiring harnesses and out..

when you have the cluster out and are working on the odometer itself, work in a box. when the circlip on the rods come off, you don't want that to flying off somewhere

its been a while, but I think you have to use a paper clip or something like that to push the pin out that holds the one of the gears in place. Also be gentle with the wiring harness that connects to the back of the cluster. Thats some old plastic and seems brittle.

Don't break the needle or pin it rides on.

A good way to pry off the needle is to use 2 spoons on opposite sides, and a microfiber (or some paper towels) to protect the face.

Try and mark the needle location relative to the shaft. If I recall it is splined and can be replaced in a different position if you are not careful.
The hardest part was getting the needle off. As suggested spoons work.

I did it. Easy job. Also a great time to change any dead light bulbs in the cluster. Pelican has them for cheap.
