My std floor jack would not fit under my car on the side, so I built a couple of wood ramps that I slip in front of the wheels and drive up onto to give me an extra 4-5 inches. Of course your car has to be drivable to do this.

I use the same wood ramps to get onto another set of ramps I have for the front wheels, which I could not get onto without contacting the body - makes for a more gradually slope to get onto the ramps and clears the body.
