Default Valve Guides installation

A while ago someone mentioned the correct way on installing valve guides. I don't remember who and how.

Can anyone shed some light in how to install? Is it as just pressing them in?
I have a 20 ton press... and a machine shop.

I'm thinking making a tool that slips into the guide and that sits ontop also to press them out and same way to push them in?
Or should i freeze them first to make them contract?

cheers.

Hey Paulyy

Does this mean you've got your new valves?

My machine shop drills the old guide until there is only a small amount of metal left to press out. The new guides are frozen, then pressed into place while still frozen. The guides are then reamed to the proper fit for the valves.

Usually the guides are frozen with liquid nitrogen before installation. Similar for valve seats.

Make sure the installed guides are reamed correctly after installing or you may start wearing out lifters and cams like another lister did recently.

I had my last set installed and reamed by a top race head fettler, in a 16v Cosworth turbo head. I don't know what clearance is needed in a modified head/motor, maybe a jobbing machine shop doesn't either.

I'll just explain to them that the work my head has received. the old guides are still in, they're still new but slightly scratched them removed the valves. i'm worried the scratch will do further damage to the guides.

You could try running the correct size reamer down the guides, if it runs through easily then try the new valves in them and check for play ?
