Default IN CAR VIDEO (& out of car...edited)

Some people have asked to see some in-car video. We've not had a lot yet, or it has had poor sound. I took this film at a recent event which was our State Time Attack titles held at a small tight and bumpy track about 2.5 hours south of Sydney in NSW. We came 2nd outright to a Pro Class car by 3 / 1000's of a second. The Pro Class cars have more room in the rules to modify their cars over those in Open Class. Paul, my builder and the #1 driver actually drove the Pro Class Pulse Evo at this event also so we got a good gauge on how our car is going at the moment. The current lap record for an Aussie V8 Supercar is about half a second slower than us.

At last year's World Time Attack Challenge we discovered that while the rear wing was working very efficiently (over 2000lbs of downforce at end of main straight!), the front was actually showing lift at the same point! So we have spent most of this year ticking off boxes on a list that was compiled by a U.S. Aerodynamicist that did a 2 day consultation on the car back in Feb. Bit by bit we are getting there. We have definite signs of downforce as shown by wear marks on the underside of the splitter.

While I finally figured out how to upload in HD onto Youtube, it's still not super clear. I think with HD Handycams they just don't really like bumpy motorsport filming. We have no insulation in the car either so that probably doesn't help. Note, that video never shows all the Undulations, bumps and speed quite like they are inside the car itself.

We're only running 18psi yet the car is certainly very quick. Once we fix the ongoing h/g issues we hope to be able to run up around 25psi + on the straights. We will also be running on a bigger track for the main event in October. We need to bump up the boost as many of our main opponents have significantly higher hp than us. Our corner speed is right up with the very fastest however.

Thanks Chaps. The grip is seriously in-freaking-tense. Even when it starts to slide I think that is more out of slower speed corners but also some medium speed 3rd into 4th gear corners. (968 6 speed box) but in general I'm sure we're going through corners that previously we were 20-30kmh down on some years ago.
I'm still a little careful when it starts to get on edge, where you can see Paul has taken the Bull by the horns and just man handles the car past the point of adhesion. I used to do this too but I'm sure it was when the car was considerably slower. All a learning curve hey???

Now do an export of data from the Motec and create an overlay in e.g Racerender

Hmm, perhaps. I'm waiting for the latest Aim Smarty Cam setup which will transcribe it directly....but might have a play before that is in the car. Thanks for the idea. :-)

That will save some effort for sure! I export my laps from AIM and then import the video and log file in Racerender. It's not the most intuitive software so it takes a little while to sync the laps with the video. I would highly recommend doing it for your own driving development. It's great seeing a pro driving the car and seeing throttle and braking inputs at the same time.

Exactly. That's why I want it too. All about improving the old bloke.

Not actually me driving in that video Tom. It's the builder of the car who happens to be a very competent driver also. I'm a few seconds behind him on most tracks but hope to slowly catch up as much as possible.

ps... I noticed that this motor isn't in the 3L list.
3Lt darton dry sleeves, Performance Development modified block and head, fully Motec'd, GTX3582, CEP Dry Sump / Cam / fuel rail. 508whp / 475ft/lbs tq 23psi E85.

Impressive would be an understatement.

It's clear even at the first corner on the warm up this car is generating some downforce (erm - alot!) .

Is the noise when you first start the fuel pump?

I can't believe it's generating one ton of downforce at the back. With whatever is in the front, you're surely making more than the car's weight. That said, I don't recommend trying any stunts driving on a ceiling!

Have you considered putting a screen over your front cooler? Out in the open like that seems risky. Obviously a screen would limit flow, but I don't know if you ever get rocks kicked up and whatnot.

Thanks for sharing!

Very cool video/car, regardless of driver

Unfortunately, the new system prevents edits to old posts so we'd need to call on Shawn to update the list with his special moderator powers...

p.s. is MoTec any cheaper down under? It costs more than most 951's in the states...
