Default Cup Holder / Knock Counter

I did this on tinkercad and printed on the Velleman K8200 printer. I'm not 100% convinced I like it yet, and my make one that can be covered in fake leather like gauge panel under radio. What do you all think? I may add an iphone charging dock to it, but suspect it might make shifting awkward. Thoughts or suggestions?

Man, you are a very clever individual Tom!

My only gripe against the knock counter is that it really doesn't help you isolate where knock is occurring. Atually, I would wager that the knock threshold parameters programmed into the KLR no longer reflect the true noise signature of most modified 2.5L and even more so 3.0L engines.

Very cool creation nontheless!

I run that knock counter along with Vitesse's V-knock, so I can log when the knock counts occur (and have LEDs under the cluster to I can see them real-time).

Re the knock signature in the KLR, I wondered the same thing when I built the motor. Somewhere deep on my back burner list, I want to record the knock sensor signal so I could experiment with the KLR on the bench to see what it thinks knock is, so I can compare that to actual knock on my car. To do that, I started in on an engine signal simulator on the Arduino, which is getting closer, but not there yet...

In the meantime, I can tell you the KLR does still produce logical knock counts. More timing, more knock counts. More boost, more knock counts. Higher octane, fewer knock counts, etc. It's probably not programmed with the perfect sound pattern for modified cars, but then again we're talking about a system that triggers when you smack the motor with a wrench, so I'm guessing the sound pattern is not that precise to start with -- a hunch that gets reinforced every time my v-knock LED lights up after going over an expansion joint...

I like it. Just needs a trim ring around it.

I'd say in black and a little thicker and rounded. Nice work

+1 for trim ting, but I'd prefer polished metal.

When will these panels be for sale?

Tom:

As always great work! Too bad I have my WBO2 there or I would have you print me one. Perfect place for a cold beer! +1 for the metal trim ring.

Nice work as usual Tom. One question leads into another. If you have the one size fits all hole and buy a cup of whatever that is just a bit bigger, then spill the coffee into the knock counter...well, is the knock counter water-proof? Silly question I know.

So are you seeing much knock and what fuel are you using?

Patrick:

Tom only buys the Good stuff! If he used good Ole home brewed corn juice he would not be seeing so much knock. He lays out Buco bucks for 110 race fuel in his tank, nothing but he best!

I think you've answered the age old question on where to put a cup holder

I used marine-grade, adhesive lined, shrink tubing on the connections -- but if the ice starts to melt on re-entry all bets are off... I'm actually thinking about swapping over to 7-segment LEDs instead of the Curtis, to make them a bit bigger and self-lit.

For on-boost knock (ignoring stray counts on shifts, etc.), I generally tolerate 1 or 2 counts per gear at WOT to redline and if I consistently get more than that will generally change something to lower it. I've yet to blow a HG with the knock counter installed, so I don't really know how many is too many. Some might say any knock is too much, though mine hasn't blown up yet. I shudder to think how many counts I was getting back when I was blowing gaskets all the time. What are you getting? Also, the more back to back boost runs, (like on the track!) the more knock-prone it tends to get. That's where water/meth helps the most I'd say.

I wish we had 110! I use 100 octane that is formulated to be street legal in CA -- which may or may not be much better than the normal 93 octane sold in other states... Water/meth injection helps too... No vegetable juice for me...

I put 130k miles on an E46 bmw commuting, and that's where its cup holder was. I'd like to take create for creativity in the 951, but actually I just kept reaching there from force of habit until I decided to just go ahead and put the drink there...

Eddie told me you would not settle for the 100 and brought the 110 home in small cans from the race shop! Well, it did impress me!
