Default TO4B & compressor housing

Hi,
Need some turbo experts to englighten me on the subject of turbos.
1. Is there a TO4B with 3 inch OD inlet ?
2. Does compressor housing exterior dimension varies with A/R ?

Thanks to all.

According to Turbonetics 2003 catalog (60 pages), the T04B compressor housing is only available with a 2.75 inch OD inlet. You would need to switch to the T04E or T3 compressor housing to obtain a 3 inch OD inlet.

Turbonetics does not quote A/R ratios for their compressor housings in their 2003 catalog. They only quote the different "Trim" levels that the housings can be configured with. It is my understanding that the different trim levels are really referring to different compressor wheels that are fitted inside the same externally sized compressor housing.

Turbonetics does quote the A/R ratios for their turbine housings. I don't know if the different A/R turbine housings are actually different in terms of their external dimensions.

Many older Garrett (AirResearch) t04b comp. housing have 3'' inlets.
I own one of them.
And i don't know for sure but they probably have had different a/r for it.
Because the t04e has 2 or 3 .
My t04b is a .60 a/r, as for the to4e i know for sure they have a .50 and a.60 a/r, and maybe even .70 a/r.

Hi Jeff, Edman,
Thanks for your reply.
Jeff, I was scratching my head too when I check
the Turbonetics catalog. Why, cause I have a 60-1 hifi
with a compressor housing that looks like a TO4B but
it's got a 3 inch inlet. After alot of search, I've come to
the conclusion that it's from some T3/T4 series.
Anyone else out there with a better explanation ?

Unfortunately, I have no experience with any of the older turbos that were produced by Turbonetics. I noticed that the new 60-1 HiFi that listed in the 2003 catalog uses a 2.75" inlet.

Since I can't help to further identify your older turbo, you might want to try calling the guys at Majestic Turbo in Waco, TX. Their phone number is 1-800-231-5566 (or www.majesticturbo.com) and they will probably be familiar with your turbo. From what I have heard, they provide quick turn around on any rebuild work and very reasonable prices.

Hmmm . . . are you saying that Majestic turbo sold you a "brand new" 60-1 HiFi and the inlet is 3 inches?? If so, I wonder if they sold you a T04B compressor housing that has not been used but was from the older design?? I think this stuff is called "new old stock". So, technically, the turbo is new (because it has not been used) although it is not the most current model??

Have you tried calling Majestic to explain that the Turbonetics catalog shows the most current 60-1 HiFi as having a 2.75 inch inlet?? If so, what did they say??

Hi Jeff,
Yes you are correct. I found out that it's an old style TO4B
housing. This is not what I ordered in the first place.
When I got the turbo, I became suspicous because it is'nt
the housing that I wanted. Called them but was told that
if the inlet is 3 inches it is what I ordered. Finally after
reconfirmation on my end that it is'nt what I wanted, I
called again & was told to send the CHRA back to them for
an renewal. The pain of it all is that I don't live in the States.
Well at least they are gracious enough to offer to pay for the
shipping cost from the States to me.
The moral of it all is : DO YOUR HOMEWORK SO THAT YOU'LL
NOT BE TAKEN AS A FOOL

Wow. I am very sorry to hear that you have had this problem with Majestic. However, it is good that you caught this because typically the newest designs are the best way to go for turbos. It would be interesting to compare the compressor maps for the older design against the newer design. I would guess that the newer design is probably more efficient than the older design . . .

I hope everything gets straightened out and you have no further problems with Majestic!!

Hi Jeff,
Thank for your concern.Well after alot of research & asking
around, I'm beginning to understand turbos more.
That's the nice thing about midifications. You learn something
new everytime. As always theres a price to be paid in life.
Back to the turbo. In reality, it's only the compressor housing
that's not according to what I ordered. The rest is O.K

FYI, I used to work around the corner from Majestic when I went to Baylor (c/o2000). Their shop has virtually every turbo you could imagine. It is a shack and a dump but holy crap do they have a lot of turbos and parts. It is however, staffed with the biggest morons you have EVER met. I couldnt believe the business they did with the service they provided.

Hey Matt,
Would'nt it surprise you if you found out that they're building
alot of turbos for some of the tuning crowd here who's
charging premiun price for it ?
