I used the search function and browsed Clark's Garage but could only find info that there was a change in 1988.
There was a mid year change in the 85' 928 but there was a date or VIN identified so it was easy to know (other than looking at the front brake calipers)

I guess the Turbo S is considered an 88.5 MY

It is true that all '89 Turbos had the M52 engine (and other S options).
What build dates do people have on their '88 Turbo Ss?

The 88 1/2 came out between the 88 1/4 and the 88 3/4.
In reality you could by a 'regular' 1988 or a 1988 Turbo S at the same time. The Turbo S was considered a special edition. in 1989 all 944 turbos were the same configuration as the 1988 Turbo S.
Keep in mind that 'model year' is not aligned with the calendar year - you could buy a 1989 Turbo in late 1988 (just like all other car makers).

Not really. Kind of the same thing as today's Boxter/Boxster S. The S was a better car, sold concurrent to the normal Turbo. My 88 is pretty late, I think it may have been an April build date, but it is not an S.

" In 1988½ Porsche introduced a new 944 Turbo which was designated as a 944 Turbo S."
Mine is a May/88 it has the club sport suspension and LSD but the engine code is a 51 not a 52.

Could be a 'regular' 944 with the M030 option.

Does yours have any of the other S features, besides the M52 engine code? Like the shock tower gussets, rolled rear fender lips, ABS, dual air bags, or split rear seat?
